PowerPoint Interactive PowerPoint Application for Language Learning IPALL
Interactive learning specifically is a process of involving some form of digital mediations between a teacher or designer and a learner. From this
perspective, an interactive learning system requires a digital device equipped with a microprocessor e.g., a computer and at least one human being a learner. The
essence of what makes a learning system interactive is the task in which learner is engaged Herrington, Oliver, Reeves as cited in Reeves, 2003 p.5. The focus of
interactive learning is on the learner. The interactive learning systems are just the tools to enhance the learning process. According to Reeves Hedberg 2003 the
forms and levels of interactivity are influenced by many aspects of the design of interactive learning systems, but none is more important than the task the learner
is trying to accomplish or the problem he or she is trying to solve. c. The Features of Interactive PowerPoint Application for Language Learning
IPALL
Interactive PowerPoint for Language Learning IPALL is specially designed to be one of the media which aims to enhance learning process inside or
outside the classroom. Interactive PowerPoint for Language Learning IPALL has various kinds of activities. It can be used by the teacher and the students who
have Microsoft Office especially Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 or 2010 in their computer.
Interactive PowerPoint for Language Learning IPALL can be used online or offline. If teachers want their students to do it online, they should upload
the slides into compatible website such as ELTGallery or CheerEnglish. Those websites are also are created by B.B. Dwijatmoko. If the students want to access
them from website, they have to open the website address and click the
PowerPoint button which is available in the website. After that, the students have to download those PowerPoints. However, if teachers want their students to do it
offline, the students just need to have the files and access it by using computer without internet access. Teacher have to provide the practice and students will do
the practice inside or outside the classroom. Interactive PowerPoint for Language Learning IPALL that has been used in this study consists of two kinds as
follows.
1 Interactive PowerPoint for Matching Exercises
The Interactive PowerPoint for Matching Exercises is the first and the simplest practice of IPALL. It is suitable to be used in vocabulary learning.
Students have to associate the questions with the correct answer. The correct answer is the meaning of the word. Sometimes, the correct answers are in English
or Bahasa. It depends on the goal of the study. According to Dwijatmoko 2015, in print, The Interactive PowerPoint for Matching Exercises is a PowerPoint
template which presents a set of words, statements, or questions on the left column and a set of jumbled words to match with the words, statements or
questions on the left column. The Interactive PowerPoint for Matching Exercises can be used to presents questions with their answer, statements with a missing
word and their answers, terms or words with their meanings and words with their synonyms or antonyms Dwijatmoko, 2015, in print. According to Burden
Byrd 1999 matching questions consist of a set of directions, a list of stems or numbered items e.g., statements, phrases, words, incomplete sentences and a list
of choices e.g., words, phrases, numbers. Students are required to make an association between each premise and the choice. Matching questions are well
suited to test knowledge in terms of definitions, dates, names, events, and other matters involving simple relationships. Matching questions are also easy to score.
The advantages of matching is that a large amount of material can be condensed to fit in less space. The range of test material can be broad, and
guessing is limited. In doing matching practice, students have chances to guess correct associations than on multiple choice and truefalse test. In making this
PowerPoint, teacher limit the number of items to make them as short as possible. If the students‟ answer is correct, the questions will dissappear one by one. If the
students‟ answer is wrong, the questions will not dissappear. Therefore, students have to repeat their practice. The features of IMaP slides are shown below.
