THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK LITERATURE REVIEW

attitudinal questions. Therefore, the survey design was considered as the most appropriate for this research since the research design was intended to gain factual information and behavior questions related to the students‟ vocabulary learning strategies. The survey design was aimed at obtaining and discovering students‟ vocabulary learning strategies adopted in IPALL. Conducting a survey design provided various data since both qualitative and quantitative data were gathered from this design using the questionnaires and interviews Cohen et.al, 2000:171. Eventually, results form the analyzing the data “lie in the appeal to generalizability or universality within given parameter, its ability to establish the degree of confidence which can be placed in a set of findings” Cohen et.al, 2000:171. Therefore, the results from the survey design, from both the questionnaire and the interview, aimed at establishing the general opinions on the use of IPALL to enhance students‟ vocabulary learning strategies. In this research, qualitative and quantitative data were used. The quantitative data were obtained from questionnaire which contains of the list of category of vocabulary learning strategies. The qualitative data such as open- ended interview provided various perspectives on the topic and a complex picture of situation. The qualitative data in this study were used to obtain the facts and students‟ opinion about the use of IPALL to enhance vocabulary learning. According to Creswell 2012:535 the quantitative data were specific numbers that can be statistically analyzed, could produce results to assess the frequency and magnitude of trends, and provide information to describe trends about a large number of people. Therefore, combining both qualitative and quantitative data provided a very powerful combination that allows the researchers dev elop „a complex‟ picture of social phenomenon Greene Caracelli, 1997:7 as cited in Creswell, 2012. Related to the notion, the quantitative data were also gathered to provide information about the frequency of trends in the context of the use of IPALL to enhance vocabulary learning strategies. Collecting and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data in this research aimed at providing complete data and elaborating them to answer the research questions.

C. RESEARCH SETTING

This research was conducted in SMK N 7 Yogyakarta. The participants of this research were students of class X semester 1 of academic year 20142015. The total numbers of the students were 64. They were X MM which consists of 32 students and X AK 1 which consists of 32 students. For the supportive data those two classes became the experiment classes. Therefore, the two classes were needed to be the control group. Those were X AK 2 and X UPW. Those classes, X AK 1 and X MM, were chosen because of time consideration and the use of IPALL during the learning activities. This research was held in SMK N 7 Yogyakarta with the considerations that the school had an English laboratory which has 35 computers. Based on the availibility, the use of IPALL could be applied successfully. According to Harmer 2007, modern language laboratory has between ten or twenty booth, each equipped with tape deck, headphones, microphon and computers. The technology is used in such a way that students can work on their own, can be paired and collaborated with other students, or can interact. Then, the English laboratory has teacher access as the terminal manned by the teacher. Hammer 2007 says that modern systems allow teachers to join booth in pairs or groups, irrespective of their position in the laboratory, by monitoring them on the screen. The school has used IPALL as the English teaching media before. Therefore, it was one of interesting media for students when learning English. This research was conducted during a semester from the beginning until the end of the first semester of class X. This research was conducted from November 2014 to March 2015. During this semester, the students had used IPALL as one of the media in learning vocabulary. The researcher conducted this research during a certain period of time considering that it needed time to see how students practiced their vocabulary learning adopted in IPALL.

D. RESEARCH PROCEDURE

In this research, the researcher did several steps to accomplish the systematic steps of survey research. The steps were taken from Creswell‟s steps in conducting survey research Creswell, 2013 : 403-404.
