Indonesian cliché which refers to God.
6. Translating Metaphor by Deleting the SL Metaphor
In translating metaphor, the translator may delete the SL metaphor only after he evaluated whether a metaphor in a certain text is more than needed or not.
According to Newmark 1981 , “a deletion of metaphor can be justified
empirically only on the ground that the metaphor’s function is being fulfilled
elsewhere in the text” p. 91. Based on the findings, this strategy obtains 7.2 from the total amount of 456. Table 4.14 illustrates the case of deleting metaphor.

The examples in table 4.14 show a different way in deleting the SL metaphor. Although both of the examples illustrate the strategy of translating
metaphor by deleting the SL metaphor, after analyzing the examples, the researcher found that the metaphor in the first example, batas langit belongs to the
dead metaphor. In Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk, the words batas langit is used to illustrate Rasus’ understanding towards Deli. Literally, the word batas means the
limit which is interpreted as the greater amount, number or level of something that

Edition, 2003. Meanwhile, the word langit, which means the sky, symbolizes the wideness and the unlimited space.
In Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk, the sky is used to illustrate the unlimited space, because the limit of the sky cannot be measured. Therefore, the words
batas langit in Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk are used to illustrate Rasus’ understanding
towards Deli, which is still confusing. Even though he was not sure whether Deli was really exist or not, because of he is stupid and he never went to school like
other Paruk people. In translating the metaphor in the first example, the translator decides to
delete the SL metaphor, and he stops the translation in Delhi, because the word batas langit is redundant. Without translating the words batas langit, the readers
still understand that the concept of Delhi is meaningless for Rasus, because the readers already know Rasus’ background. Even though the metaphor is deleted,
the translation is still accurate and clear. In conclusion, this translation is categorized as an acceptable translation.
In the second example, the translator deletes the whole sentence. After the researcher analyses the sentence “dua orang yang sejak kelahiran mereka menjadi
murid alam” p. 130, the researcher concludes that the image of the metaphor is murid alam. However, the topic of the sentence is dua orang, which refers to
Wirsiter and Ciplak. They are the married couple, who work as a busker in the Dawuhan market. Although they never learn to sing and play the music formally,
Wirsiter can play the kecapi well, and Ciplak can sing beautifully. However, the translato
r decides to delete the whole sentence because the metaphor “dua orang
70 yang sejak kelahiran mereka menjadi murid alam” p. 130, is not needed in The
Dancer. The reader will directly understand that Wirsiter and Ciplak learn music autodidact and they never learn music formally. In conclusion, this translation is
categorized as an unacceptable translation because there is no translation for this metaphor.
7. Translating Metaphors by Using the Same Metaphor Combined with
