d. Reflection of Cycle 1

After finishing Cycle 1, the researcher with the collaborator did a reflection of the teaching and learning process of students’ vocabulary mastery by using Play School DVD . The purpose was to evaluate the action in the cycle. The good points would be kept and the bad ones would be revised so that Cycle 2 could be done better. There were two main points that were evaluated; the process of the teaching and learning and the learning progress. 1 The Results of the Teaching and Learning Process of Cycle 1 are as follows: a The Good Points 1 The using of Play School DVD as the media in teaching vocabulary could attract the students’ attention to focus on the topic given. 2 Play School DVD gave the real picture of the words that were being learnt so that the students could get better understanding of the vocabulary they learnt. 3 Play School DVD enabled the students to produce the correct pronunciation because they imitated it from the native in Play School DVD. 4 By using Play School DVD, the researcher could create a good enviroment in the teaching-learning process that motivated the students to take part in it actively. commit to user b The Bad Points 1 The researcher still got difficulties in controlling the class. 2 The students still got problems in spelling. It happened because for some students who were formerly from Kalam Kudus Kindergarten, it was the first time for them learning the word by using spelling. When they were at kindergarten, they learnt the word by using phonics. The researcher needed to give more drills on spelling to the students. 3 The students still got problems in using the words to construct a very simple sentence. It happened because the students still got difficulties in arranging the words into a correct sentence. It is also because the students still got difficulties to write the correct form of the word. They sometimes missed one or two letters. 4 There were some students who were afraid or unmotivated to take part in the learning process. 2 The Result of Learning Progress of Cycle 1 To evaluate the improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery, the researcher and the collaborator took the result of the students’ Post-test 1 and compared to the pre-test. The students’ average score of the Pre-test was 38.87 and the students’ average score of Post-test 1 was 66.58. It means that there was an improvement in students’ mastery in vocabulary. The more detail data about the students’ Post-test 1 result can be found in Appendix 6.e. commit to user The result of Post-test 1 based on their vocabulary aspects was also evaluated. The average score of: 1 pronouncing the word was 88.19; 2 spelling the word was 53.33; 3 word meaning was 80; and 4 the using of word in a sentence was 44.79. Table 4.4 The Average Score of Pre-test Result Vocabulary Aspects Highest Lowest Average Pronunciation 83.33 16.67 46.53 Spelling 80 34.17 Word meaning 80 35 59.17 The use of word 100 15.625 Table 4.5 The Average Score of Post-test 1 Result Vocabulary Aspects Highest Lowest Average Pronunciation 100 50 88.19 Spelling 100 20 53.33 Word meaning 100 40 80 The use of word 100 44.79 commit to user From the result, it can be concluded that the students were successful in pronouncing the word and understanding the meaning of the word. The students still got problems in spelling the word and using the word in a sentence. The problems occured because of some causes. First, the causes came from the students themselves. They did not pay attention to what explained by the teacher. Second, the class was noisy. The students could not concentrate well. Therefore the researcher should create better enviroment in teaching-learning process and also should give more drilling in spelling and in the using of words. The percentage of the students based on the result of their scores viewed from their reading skills can be seen in Table 4.6 below. Table 4.6 The Percentage of the Students based on the Result of Their Score in Post-test 1 Viewed from Their Vocabulary Aspects. Vocabulary Aspects 60 ≥60 - 79 ≥80 Pronunciation 1 students 4 students 19 students 4,17 16,67 79,17 Spelling 12 students 3 students 9 student 50,00 12,50 37,50 Word meaning 2 students 6 students 16 students 8,33 25,00 66,67 The use of word 16 students 4 student 4 students 66,67 16.67 16,67 The table shows that most of the students got better in pronouncing the word and understanding the meaning of word. From the table, it can be concluded commit to user that most of the students still got problem in spelling the word and using the word in a sentence. From this condition, the teaching learning process of vocabulary using Play School DVD must be continued to Cycle 2.
