Abstract.
The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics and
quality of empirical of math instrument UASBN SDMI tested in Jombang in East Java in 20092010. The method used is a theoretical and empirical analysis.
Theoretical analysis done by asking three experts in mathematics education to examine the instrument from the aspect of the content, construction and
language. Meanwhile, the empirical analysis conducted on 248 students answers using program ITEMAN and BIGSTEPS. The results showed that: a
theoretically, the content and construct validity was good. But in terms of face validity, there are 3 points need to be revised because of unclear or pose a double
interpretations, b empirically: i reliability the UASBN instrument included in the high category with a Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.894 and categorized as good
reliability, ii for the index of discrimination, there are 38 items we had good and 2 items needs to be revised because it has index less than 0.3, iii for the aspect
of difficulty level, there are 39 items which is good and only one item need to be revised because it has a high difficulty level that is less than 0.3, iv for the
aspect of effectiveness of distractor, 21 items has distractors work properly and 19 items with some or all of theirs distractors which not working.
