CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD

This chapter is about the method of doing the research. It contains of five sections. They are type of the research, data and data sources, research instruments, data collecting techniques, data analysis techniques and trustworthiness. Firstly, the type of the research is explained followed by the data and the source of the data. After that, instruments of the research are also described. Then, the data collecting techniques are needed to be clarified; the table of data sheet is presented. After the ways of collecting the data, data analysis techniques are explained. Last, the trustworthiness of this research closes the explanation of this chapter.

A. Type of Research

This study is categorized as descriptive qualitative research. According to Bodgan and Binklen 1982:28, descriptive qualitative research concerns providing description of a phenomenon that occurs naturally without any intervention of an experiment or an artificially contrived treatment. In line with Bodgan and Binklen, Berg 2001:3 says that a qualitative research refers to meanings, concepts, definitions, characteristics, and descriptions of things. Then, to analyze the data related to their contexts, the researcher uses content analysis method.

B. Data and Source of Data

The main data are the idiomatic expressions in the English text and their translations in the Bahasa Indonesia subtitling text. Meanwhile, the supporting data are sentences served as data contexts and support their meanings. The data sources of the research are the script of the movie for English text and the subtitle of the movie for the Bahasa Indonesia text. The script is obtained from: http:www.springfieldspringfield.co.ukmovie_script.php?movie=iron-man-3 and the subtitle is taken from an original VCD of Iron Man 3 2013 movie.

C. Research Instruments

To record and classify data, the researcher applied data sheets in collecting the data. Some dictionaries of idioms are used to identify the occurrences of idiomatic expressions and to find out their meanings. Those dictionaries are Dictionary of English Idioms by Richard A. Spears published by Penerbit Erlangga and two electronic dictionaries: English Idiom Dictionary, by Kreatorz Wiktionary and Idioms and Phrases Dictionary by Buffalo Software. However, the researcher himself served as the key instrument since he recorded, analyzed, and described the research data as the process of qualitative research. It is based on the statement that the characteristic of the qualitative research is that the research uses human being or the researcher himself as the main instrument of the research Mulyana, 2002:158.
