Chapter 25 ✦ Understanding Multimedia Figure 25-2: Identify your speaker setup. The Performance tab offers options for you to set for hardware acceleration and rate conversion quality. You adjust these settings to manage how Windows plays sounds on your computer. Hardware acceleration describes how fast you want to mix the sound coming from your multi- media applications. Sound mixing describes how various sounds work together to create the whole. If you play a music piece that has several different instruments on it, for example, the mix describes which instrument is the loudest, which sounds brighter, and so on. In most cases, you should use full hardware acceleration. If, however, you notice that the sound is garbled or distorted, you can turn down the hardware acceleration. Figure 25-3 shows the Performance tab in the Advanced Audio Properties dialog box. To turn down the sound, click the hardware acceleration slider and drag it to the left. Figure 25-3: Adjust audio playback. Part VII ✦ Adding to Your Home Network Rate conversion quality involves the processor’s involvement in audio response time. This option indicates how much of your processor operation you want to dedicate to audio. For best results, choose Good. If, however, you find your processor is running slower and perfor- mance seems adversely affected, turn the rate conversion quality option down a bit. If you click the icon in the Playback area of the Audio tab, the Volume Control dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 25-4. You can adjust the balance between the left and right speak- ers, as well as the volume, for any selected device. Figure 25-4: Control the balance between speakers when playing certain sounds and devices. Recording The Recording options are similar to the Playback options on the Audio tab. You can choose your preferred device and then set hardware acceleration and rate conversion quality for that device. You also can display balance and volume controls for the recording devices. You have only two options here, though: the CD option and the microphone balance and volume option. Setting video options The Video tab of the Multimedia Properties dialog box enables you to choose the default size you want to use when viewing a video window. You can choose to view all videos at full screen, at 1 ⁄ 16 th of the screen, at 1 ⁄ 4 of the screen, at 1 ⁄ 2 of the screen, or at twice the original size. Working with MIDI options The MIDI tab of the Multimedia Properties dialog box enables you to choose the instruments connected to your sound card, such as a keyboard or drum machine, and also enables you to add new instruments. If you don’t have instruments connected to your computer, the MIDI tab displays your sound card but doesn’t enable you to make changes. You can add a new instrument by using the MIDI Instrument Installation Wizard. To initiate the wizard, click the Add New Instrument button in the MIDI tab. When you add an instru- ment, you define the port and sound card to which the instrument is attached. Chapter 25 ✦ Understanding Multimedia
