Click Use the Following IP Address. Enter the IP address, subnet mask, and default gate- Optionally, assign a preferred DNS server and an alternate DNS server.

Appendixes To install dial-up networking to Windows 98, follow these steps:

1. Choose Start ➪ Settings ➪ AddRemove Programs. The AddRemove Programs

Properties dialog box appears. 2. Choose the Windows Setup tab. 3. Double-click Communications in the Components list. The Communications dialog box appears. 4. Check the check box to the left of the Dial-Up Networking component and then click OK. 5. In the AddRemove Programs Properties dialog box, click OK to install the feature. If prompted to insert the Windows Installation CD, do so.

6. When Windows has finished installing the dial-up networking feature, it displays the

Dial-Up Networking Setup dialog box. Click OK and restart your computer. Creating a connection in Windows 98 To configure dial-up networking, you first must create a connection. You can create connec- tions to Internet service providers, government agencies, your home network, and your office network, for example. Then, when you’re ready to call, you simply open the connection and Windows takes over. To create a remote access connection in Windows 98, follow these steps: 1. Open My Computer. 2. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon. The Dial-Up Networking window appears, as shown in Figure C-10. Figure C-10: Create a new connection.

3. Double-click the Make New Connection icon. The first dialog box of the Make New

Connection Wizard appears, as shown in Figure C-11.

4. Accept the default name — My Connection — for the new connection, or type a name of

5. If you have more than one modem attached to your computer, select the modem from

the Select a Device drop-down list. The Configure button displays the individual modem’s Properties dialog box, which enables you to make any changes to the connection, speaker volume, maximum speed, or other property.

6. Click Next. The second wizard dialog box appears, as shown in Figure C-12.

7. Enter the area code and the telephone number of the computer you want to call. Make

sure the country code is correct.

8. Click Next. The resulting wizard dialog box informs you that the connection has been

created.

9. Click the Finish button to return to the Dial-Up Networking window. Figure C-13 illus-
