Appendix C ✦ Telecommuting ✦ General tab Windows 98 — Set the speaker volume. The sound you hear after dialing is the modem negotiating with the modem on the other end of the line. Maximum speed sets the fastest speed the modem can go, depending on the speed of the communica- tions line and of the other modem. Generally, you shouldn’t check the option to con- nect only at a specific speed, because you limit the use and efficiency of your modem. ✦ General tab Windows XP — Description of the device, device status, and whether to enable or disable the device in this hardware profile. ✦ Connection tab — Use this tab to change the modem’s default configuration only if you understand the settings. Other complex options include the Port Settings and Advanced buttons. You might want to set call preferences, however. Call preferences describe how to handle an unanswered call and idle connection, as shown in Figure C-7, from Windows 98. Figure C-7: Set call preferences. ✦ Distinctive Ring tab — If your telephone uses a service called distinctive ring, you can use this tab to assign numbers and rings to different services — data, fax, and voice. If you assign a specific ring to faxes, for example, when someone dials the number with a fax machine, the modem routes the fax to the fax program. ✦ Forwarding tab — If you use call forwarding on the phone line using the modem, you can activate it here. You use call forwarding when you are away from your computer but want to receive calls at another location. ✦ Modem tab — In 2000 or XP, set the speaker volume, the maximum port speed, and the dial control in this tab. You can also identify the modem’s port. ✦ Diagnostics tab — Contains a Modem Information area that displays hardware informa- tion about the modem. This tab also contains a Query Modem button that sends com- munications to the modem to ensure it is working. Figure C-8 illustrates this tab in Windows XP after the Query Modem button was clicked. Appendixes ✦ Advanced tab — Enables you to set initialization commands, port settings, or change default preferences for your modem. This tab contains advanced configurations. ✦ Driver tab — Describes the driver provider, version, date, and driver details. You can also update the driver for the modem in this tab. ✦ Resources tab — Lists the IO range, memory, and IRQ information about the modem. ✦ Power Management tab — Sets power configurations for standby mode. Figure C-8: Check to see if your modem is working correctly. To set a modem’s properties, follow these steps: 1. Open the Control Panel. 2.
