CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS, IMPLICATIONS, AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter consists of three parts which are conclusions, implications and suggestions. The first part is some conclusions which summarize the description of Mr. Lewisham and his conflicts including how he solves his conflicts. The second part is some implications which explain how the study is related to the education major. The last part is some suggestions for further researchers who will analyze H.G. Wells’ Love and Mr. Lewisham with different topics.

A. Conclusions

There are two parts that can be concluded from the analysis. Those are the description of Mr. Lewisham and his conflicts including what his conflicts are and how he solves them. Based on the analysis, it can be summarized that Mr. Lewisham is the main character in the story because the whole story tells about his life. He is also portrayed as the round character because his characteristics change when he faces many problems in his marriage life. By using Murphy’s theory to characterize the character, Mr. Lewisham is characterized through physical description, manners, conversation with other characters, thought, and reactions. His first characteristic is described as a loving person through his manners. No matter how hard his conflict with his wife, he still loves her until the end. Second, he is very well-organized. He arranges his study daily activities, budget through his Schema, the time table, and notes. Those are seen from his manner. However, from his thoughts and manners show that he is PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 60 also a doubtful person. At first he puts many great efforts for his study but he abandons his study for his love. Next characteristic of Mr. Lewisham is sensitive. Here, he feels how Whortley and South Kensington are different from the social class especially about poverty and delivers his idea by joining Debating Society at his school. The way he shows his characteristic is through his reactions and manners. The last characteristic of him is thoughtful from his thoughts and conversations with others. When he faces some conflicts, he makes a decision by asking for some opinions, observing the culture of his society, and considering about his wife’s background. As a husband as well as a student, Mr. Lewisham faces many conflicts in his marriage life which interpersonal and intrapersonal conflicts. Some people who involve in his interpersonal conflicts are Chaffery and Ethel. He applies negotiation successfully for his problems with Chaffery, his father in-law. The first problem is about getting married with Ethel without her parents’ consent. The solution is Chaffery will not interfere his marriage without forcing her to work at Séance. The second problem is about the different perceptions between them. He considers that a Medium’s job is wrong because it deceives people through some tricks. On the other hand, Chaffery feels that his job as a Medium is better than the society sin. To end their conflict, both of them agree that they will respect each other’s belief. He also applies various solutions for his problems with Ethel, his wife. The first problem is about her jealously. She is jealous about Alice’s letter to him. To avoid more quarrels, he uses exit by leaving his apartment to avoid more problems. Then, he applies identity development to evaluate himself and intimacy by sending her some roses. The second problem is about roses. Ethel hides the roses because PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 61 she thinks that those are from Mr. Baynes. However, he thinks that she is unfaithful by cheating with his boss. Therefore, he yells to her that he will leave her. Here, he applies exit again by ending their conversation badly. In the end, both apply negotiation and voice to save their marriage by understanding each other. Besides the interpersonal conflicts, Mr. Lewisham also faces some intrapersonal conflicts. The first conflict is an approach-approach conflict when he chooses between his marriage or his study. To solve it, he applies adding cognition to ensure his decision by listening to his friends’ suggestions and persuading Ethel that this is the only way to free her form he job. This conflict is followed by a double approach-avoidance conflict where he should choose to leave his study or not when he spends his life as a husband and a student. To solve it, he applies adding cognition again by leaving his study after hearing some opinion from some experienced people and focusing on marriage as the most important thing for him after he loses his passion to study. The second conflict is an approach-avoidance conflict where he should choose to leave his wife twice. The first problem is about his disappointment to his wife because she cannot understand his dream through Alice’ letter. The second problem is about his disappointment to his wife because she cannot understand his intention to fix their marriage. To resolve the first problem, he applies changing cognition about the nature of conflict itself which cannot be avoided. To resolve the second problem, he still applies changing cognition by changing his mind because he cannot deny his worries if he lets her to live alone.
