CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTION

This chapter presents the conclusions and suggestions. In the first part, the researcher concludes the study. Second part provides suggestions to follow up this completed study.

A. Conclusions

This study aimed at answering two research questions. Based on the findings and the discussion, at this point the writer would like to present the conclusion of the study. The first research question seeks to find out the students’ mastery in translating relative clauses from Indonesian into English. The researcher used a test to answer the question. The result of the test was examined to measure the participants’ mastery. From the test result, the writer found that most of the participants, the fifth semester students, have insufficient mastery in translating relative clauses from Indonesian into English. Most of them 73.44 obtained low scores on the test. The average of the total correct answers achieved by each participant was 40.3. It includes them in Category E for mastery which means their mastery is poor or below the standard of the university. The second research question aimed at finding out types of errors that the students made in translating relative clauses from Indonesian into English. The writer examined the participants’ works to find out their errors. From the result of the test, the participants were failed to produce idiomatic natural translation of relative clauses from Indonesian into English. Yet, the participants showed clear understanding on the theory of relative clauses the use of relative pronouns and commas in the construction. Nevertheless, there were some common errors appeared in their translation. As discussed before, the errors are 1 errors in relative clauses construction which were divided into errors in relative pronouns use and errors in comma use; and 2 errors in translation which were divided into errors in grammar omission and punctuation and errors in meaning diction and spelling. As conclusion, the instrument used in this study has given clear answer for the two research questions proposed. Although the participants showed clear understanding on the use of relative pronouns and comma in relative clauses construction, it did not prevent them from getting low scores on the test. The result of the test showed their insufficient mastery in translating relative clauses from Indonesian into English. This is because the understanding of relative clauses solely was not sufficient to produce an idiomatic translation. It needs skills other than grammatical knowledge only. To gain idiomatic translation, the participants needs more practice translating texts to expand their cope of vocabularies so that they can choose the right diction to use in the right context.
