1. Suggestion for English Teachers and Instructors

This research took the fifth semester students of the English Language Education Study program of Sanata Dharma University as the participants of the study. The participants were teachers candidates who were expected to teach English in their professional performance. Their target students are Indonesian learners. In the preparation of becoming teachers, the fifth semester students would have to take Program Pengalaman Lapangan in the following semester. This program requires them to teach in educational institution SMP and SMA. In this program, they would meet the discussion of relative clauses in their classes and they should be able to make their students Indonesian learners understand the concept of relative clauses. Therefore, these teacher candidates should be able to translate relative clauses from Indonesian into English in order to be able to explain and deliver the material relative clauses clearly. In teaching English, especially in the discussion of relative clauses, teachers should really make sure the students recognize not only the patterns of the clauses but also the use and context of the pattern, i.e. the correct use of PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 59 relative pronouns and commas in the construction. This understanding would lead them to a clear understanding of the pattern hence enable them to produce correct construction. When the construction is correct it would be easier to move to the next step, i.e. the correct translation. In teaching translation of this topic, teachers should firstly check whether the students have clearly understood the pattern and the use of English relative clauses in sentences. Once they understood the concept of English relative clauses, teachers may ask students to examine the differences of the English relative clauses from Indonesian relative clauses. Then, it would be better to start with principles of translation and train them to practice translating texts as natural as possible from the beginning. Teachers should keep in mind that idiomatic translation could only be produced not only from clear understanding and good theories on the field, but also from experiences. Hence, it needs a lot of practices. Teachers may give the students tasks to translate many types of passages in form of individualgroup projects or other related tasks for the students’ independent learning.
