b. Errors in Meaning

Errors in translation also categorized into errors in meaning. It encompasses the discussion of errors in diction and spelling found in the participants’ work. Errors in diction speak about word choice, while errors in spelling discuss misspelling of words. 1 Diction Errors in diction occurred because of the wrong choice of words which changes the meaning or the message of the sentence. Some words probably seem to be synonymous, but often those words have different function or usage hence cannot be used in the same sentence. Here are some errors in diction that the participants made in the test. a He is one of the most generous man that I’ve ever recognized. P:8 Intended answer: She is one of the kindest people whothatø I know. b Journalism, which I took in 1999, did not served in the school. P:64 Intended answer: The journalism course, which I took in 1999, is no longer taught at the college. c He likes to talk to everybody who can come as a good listener. In sample a, the word ‘recognize’ does not seem to be appropriate for the translation of ‘kenal’. The word ‘recognize’ means ‘mengenali’ in Indonesian, not ‘mengenal’. Whereas in the sentence in sample a the participants should translate the word ‘kukenal’ passive form of saya mengenal, therefore ‘kenal’ here would be more appropriate to be translated into ‘know’. The word ‘man’ should be in plural form because it talks about one among many. The correct form for this sentence would be: He is one of the most generous men that I have ever known. Sample b shows the example of wrong choice of diction in word ‘served’. In Indonesian, ‘serve’ as a verb means melayani, mengabdi, meladeni, menyajikan, atau pukulan pertama dalam permainan tenis. Therefore, it is not suitable to use to translate the word ‘ditawarkan’. The word ‘school’ is also inappropriate to translate ‘kuliah’. In addition, the auxiliary ‘did’ in the sentence does not seem to be suitable for the context. The correct form of the sentence in sample b would be: Journalism, which I took in 1999, is no longer taught at the college. In sample c, the word ‘come’ is incorrect. It is not suitable to translate the word ‘dapat’ which in English often translated into ‘able’. The word ‘everyone’ may only use in spoken or informal writing. The correct form of this sentence should be: He likes to talk to anyone who can be a good listener. Because the test that the writer conducted required the participants to write down the answers, hence it is inevitable to find many spelling errors in their work. From the test result, it is shown that some of the errors in spelling might as well categorized into errors in pat of speech. Some of the examples of the participants’ errors in spelling are shown below. a He is one of the kindness people that I know. P:63 Intended answer: She is one of the kindest people whothatø I know. b I always feel that there is a believe in every people who is support his taught. P:63 Intended answer: I always feel confidence in someone whothat speaks his mind. c He gave me this jamper, which he knited by himself. P:60 Intended answer: She gave me this jumper, which she had knitted herself. In sample a the word ‘kindness’ is misspelled. In the sentence, the participant intended to use superlative form of ‘kind’, which is ‘kindest’. Unfortunately, the participant misspelled it into ‘kindness’, which happens to be the Noun form of ‘kind’ different part of speech. The word ‘kindest’ and ‘kindness’ are different in meaning. Thus the use of ‘kindness’ in sample a is incorrect. The correct form for the sentence would be: He is one of the kindest people that I know. In the sentence, the participant intended to write ‘belief’ as the English translation of ‘kepercayaan’. But he turned to write the verb form of the word, i.e. ‘believe’. The words ‘believe’ and ‘belief’ are of different part of speech. The word ‘taught’ is also misspelled. This word is the past participle for ‘teach’. To translate ‘pikiran’, the right word would be ‘thought’. The word ‘support’ is incorrect choice of diction. The correct sentence for sample b is: I always feel confidence in someone that speaks his mind. In sample c, the word ‘jamper’ and ‘knited’ are misspelled. The word ‘jamper’ should be ‘jumper’, which means a knitted piece of clothing made of wool or cotton for the upper part of the body with long sleeves and no button, also known as sweater. The word ‘knited’ missed one letter ‘t’ in the middle, it should be ‘knitted’. These two misspelled words do not really change the meaning of the sentence, but the error production made the sentence incorrect. CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTION

This chapter presents the conclusions and suggestions. In the first part, the researcher concludes the study. Second part provides suggestions to follow up this completed study.

A. Conclusions

This study aimed at answering two research questions. Based on the findings and the discussion, at this point the writer would like to present the conclusion of the study. The first research question seeks to find out the students’ mastery in translating relative clauses from Indonesian into English. The researcher used a test to answer the question. The result of the test was examined to measure the participants’ mastery. From the test result, the writer found that most of the participants, the fifth semester students, have insufficient mastery in translating relative clauses from Indonesian into English. Most of them 73.44 obtained low scores on the test. The average of the total correct answers achieved by each participant was 40.3. It includes them in Category E for mastery which means their mastery is poor or below the standard of the university. The second research question aimed at finding out types of errors that the students made in translating relative clauses from Indonesian into English.
