samples said that they did not study the English preposition in depth, so that they made mistakes in using prepositions. Another cause was the participants did not
know the appropriate usage of preposition, it is stated by twelve 12 participants or 40 out of the total samples. One participant or 3.33 out of the total samples
said that the teacher did not explain the usage of English preposition in the class.
b. Interview
The researcher interviewed six 6 participants to gather the data. There were four female participants and two male participants. The researcher asked
several questions about English prepositions, the difficulties which participants face when used English prepositions, and the causes which led difficulties to the
participants to learn English preposition. In the first question, the researcher asked them about their opinion when
using English prepositions. All of them answered that the usage of English prepositions was not easy enough. For further investigation, the researcher asked
them about the reasons why they said so. All of the participants answered that they found difficulties to choose the appropriate prepositions in a sentence. In
their opinion, English prepositions had similar meaning when they were translated in Bahasa Indonesia. All of the participants also said that they still translate
Bahasa Indonesia into English word by word, so that sometimes they did not find the appropriate preposition and expression in the certain context. As the result, the
participants made some erroneous items in using prepositions. The researcher also asked them the causes of their errors in using English
prepositions. Three participants answered that they did not study the usage of

English prepositions in depth in the class. Two other participants answered that they did not understand well the usage of English prepositions. Another
participant answered that she knew the English preposition but sometimes she forgot which one is the appropriate one. All of the participants stated that they
study English prepositions in the class only. They did not have motivation to study English preposition by themselves outside the class. The next question was
about their effort to solve their problem in applying preposition. Three participants answered that they looked up the dictionary to find the appropriate
prepositions. Two participants said that they asked their friends to find the appropriate prepositions. Another participant said that he asked the teacher in
using the appropriate prepositions.
