Table 4.3 showed that most of preposition errors made by tenth grade student was place and position form. The result was the same with the first result
on the first topic Table 4.2 where the highest rank of errors was in place and position form with 64,79 from total 71 items of preposition errors. The second
rank was in direction and motion form with 19,72. Time form was in the third rank with 9,86, and the lowest rank was manner, agent, and instrument form
with 5,63. In short, based on the result above it can be concluded that the preposition error which is commonly made by tenth grade student of SMA 1
Sapuran, Wonosobo was in place and position form.
3. Data Presentation of Questionnaire and Interview
The researcher used two instruments to investigate the possible causes of errors, they are questionnaire and interview. This part presents the result of the
questionnaire and interview.
a. Questionnaire
There were 30 copies of questionnaire which were distributed in Class XE SMA 1 Sapuran, Wonosobo. Actually there were thirty two 32 participants, but
two participants were absent at the moment. The researcher discussed the entire questionnaire as the samples. The questionnaire consisted of seven items and each

question consisted of three items. The questionnaire asked about students’ opinion of importance preposition in writing, participants
’ ability to choose appropriate preposition in certain context, and the participants
’ problem to produce appropriate preposition.
The table below is the result of the questionnaire.

Table 4.8 revealed that there were nineteen 19 participants or 63.33 out of the total samples agreed that the usage of preposition was important in writing.
Meanwhile, eleven 11 participants or 36.67 out of the total samples strongly agreed that the usage of preposition was important in writing. No one of the total
samples agreed that the forms of preposition were important in writing. There were twenty seven 27 participants or 90 out of the total samples
use appropriate preposition in their writing, 6.67 participants or two 2 participants out of thirty 30 states that they surely use the appropriate
preposition in their writing. As much 3.33 out of the total samples or only one 1 participant stated that heshe did not use appropriate preposition in hisher
writing.

From thirty participants, there are twenty two 22 participants or 73.33 out of the total samples agreed that choosing the appropriate preposition in writing
will deliver the message to the reader well. The rest of the students or eight 8 participants 26.67 stated that they absolutely agreed to choose appropriate
preposition to deliver the message well. Fourteen 14 participants or 46.67 out of total samples agreed that it
was difficult to choose the appropriate preposition in writing. Three 3 participants strongly agreed with the statement. The rest, thirteen 13 participants
did not agree that choosing appropriate prepositions was difficult. When facing a difficulty in using the appropriate preposition, 96.67
participants out of total samples or 30 participants agreed to use dictionary to help them find the appropriate prepositions. There was only one 1 participant or
3.33 out of the total sample who disagreed to check the dictionary to help himher.
There were fifteen 15 participants 50 who said that the problem in using preposition was distinguishing the usage of preposition in English. The
different answers were stated by twelve 12 participants or 40 out of the total samples. They said that they had difficulty in choosing appropriate preposition
when they used preposition in their writing. Three 3 other participants 10 said that matching between the English preposition and Bahasa Indonesia
preposition was the problem for them. There were some causes of difficulties in using preposition stated by
participants. There were seventeen 17 participants or 56.67 out of the total

samples said that they did not study the English preposition in depth, so that they made mistakes in using prepositions. Another cause was the participants did not
know the appropriate usage of preposition, it is stated by twelve 12 participants or 40 out of the total samples. One participant or 3.33 out of the total samples
said that the teacher did not explain the usage of English preposition in the class.
