Participant 6: “Kalau PR gitu saya tanya kakak di rumah, tapi kalau di sekolah
saya kan bawa kamus jadi buka kamus aja soalnya kalau tanya teman mereka seringnya sama-sama ga tau sih.
” When I had homework, I asked my sister at home, but when I was in the class I
look up the dictionary. It is because when I asked my friends, they were also did not have an idea
In this case the students need a support from the other and also from themselves. Other factors of student’s lack of motivation are the teacher and the
material. Norrish 1983:21 also stated in his books that the causes of errors are not always student’s fault; perhaps the material or the styles of presentation do not
suit the students. Sometimes when teach the students in the class, the teacher use uninteresting method that lead the students bored and unmotivated. The traditional
method and instrument also be factors of that. The material which is been taught also has a role in motivating the students. Uninteresting material usually be a
source of boredom for the students. Most of the students are also uninterested to learn that kind of material.
b. First Language Interference
It is obviously showed in the analysis of the preposition errors made by tenth grade students of SMA 1 Sapuran, Wonosobo that mother tongue influences
them in mastering the second language, in this case is English. The interference of the mother tongue language is largely unconscious in the mind of the students. the
students automatically use the pattern or terms that they learn in their first language into the second language. In writing, all of the prepositions in Bahasa

Indonesia di, pada, di dalam, di atas can be replaced as di. Unfortunately those prepositions are negatively transferred into English by the students. Meanwhile,
English prepositions such as at, in, on are irreplaceable. It is also possible that the students borrowed their first language Bahasa Indonesia pattern to produce a
sentence or utterance in second language English. This case is also related to the first language interference. As explained in
the previous section that preposition in Bahasa Indonesia is replaceable. They have the similar meaning when it is attached in a sentence. On the other hand,
when they are translated in English the students should choose the appropriate preposition to express the exact meaning because English prepositions are
irreplaceable. Preposition „on‟ has different meaning when it is attached in
different sentence, for example 1 He put the book on the table. 2 She goes to Jakarta on Monday.
„On‟ the first sentence in Bahasa Indonesia means di atas but in the second sentence it means pada.
This case appears when the participants answer question number six in the questionnaire. In this question, the students were asked the difficulties in applying
preposition. There were fifteen participants 50 answered the problem in using preposition was distinguishing the usage of preposition in English. The result of
the interview was also the same. All of the participants answered that they found difficulties to choose the appropriate prepositions in a sentence. In their opinion,
English prepositions have similar meaning when they are translated in Bahasa Indonesia. All of them also said that they still translate Bahasa Indonesia into
English word by word, so that sometimes they did not find the appropriate

preposition and expression in the certain context. As the result, the participants made some errors in using prepositions. Below are the answers of the participants.
Participant 3: “Susah translatenya dari Indonesia ke Inggris. Kalo dari Inggris ke
Indonesia kan masih bisa dikira- kira.” It is difficult to translate
Indonesian into English. Translating English into Indonesia is easier
Participant 4: “Bingung cari preposisi yang pas di bahasa Inggris, habis mirip-
mirip sih ” I am confused to find the proper prepositions because
they are similar Participant 6:
“Ga bisa bedain penggunaan in, at, on…soalnya artinya kalau di Bahasa Indonesia hampir sama sih.” I am not able to distinguish
the usage of in, at, on because their meaning in Bahasa Indonesia are similar
c. Overgeneralization
