2. The Possible Causes of Errors in Using Prepositions Made by Tenth

Grade Students This section discussed the possible causes of errors in using preposition. From the data presentation of questionnaire and interview above, there were similar answers. According to the participan ts’ answers, the preposition errors were caused by the following aspects.

a. Students’ Lack of Motivation

Based on the students’ answer when they were interviewed by the researcher, in the class students have been taught about preposition in the class by the teacher, but sometimes they did not want to pay enough attention to the teacher’s explanation. This kind of behavior leads the students to have a lack of motivation to learn the subject. Lack of motivation can be from the students itself and also can be from the teacher or material which cannot be accepted by the students. Lack of motivation from students itself exists because the students do not have a passion to study the subject. They do not eager to mastering a subject or even only to know it. This aspect stated in the answer of questionnaire number 7. This question asked about the causes of students’ difficulties in applying proper preposition. Seventeen participants or 56.67 out of the total samples answered that the cause of their difficulty in applying proper preposition was they did not study the English preposition in depth. The result of the interview also stated the same answer. When the researcher asked them about the causes of students’ difficulties in applying proper preposition, three participants 50 out of six PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI participants answered that they did not study the usage of English prepositions in depth in the class. The answers of the participants can be stated as follows. Participant 1: “Saya tidak belajar secara mendalam,cuma kalau pas dijelasin aja di kelas” I did not study preposition in depth, I just studied it when it was explained in the class Participant 3: “Ga mempelajari banget…ga mudeng kalau belajar sendiri.” I did not study preposition well… I did not understand when studied it by myself Participant 4: “Saya ga gitu belajar soal preposisi…paling ya pakai preposisinya yang itu-itu aja kaya at, in, on. ” I did not study preposition well… I used the familiar preposition such as at, in, on Another result of interview also showed the students’ lack of motivation in learning English preposition. When the researcher asked them about their effort to solve their problem in applying preposition, only three participants answered that they look up the dictionary to find the appropriate prepositions as their effort to solve their problem in applying preposition. Two participants said that they asked their friends to find the appropriate prepositions. Another participant said that he asked the teacher in using the appropriate prepositions. It is because when I asked my friends, they were also did not have an idea In this case the students need a support from the other and also from themselves. Other factors of student’s lack of motivation are the teacher and the material. Norrish 1983:21 also stated in his books that the causes of errors are not always student’s fault; perhaps the material or the styles of presentation do not suit the students. Sometimes when teach the students in the class, the teacher use uninteresting method that lead the students bored and unmotivated. The traditional method and instrument also be factors of that. The material which is been taught also has a role in motivating the students. Uninteresting material usually be a source of boredom for the students. Most of the students are also uninterested to learn that kind of material.
