Overgeneralization The Possible Causes of Errors in Using Prepositions Made by Tenth

preposition and expression in the certain context. As the result, the participants made some errors in using prepositions. Below are the answers of the participants. Participant 3: “Susah translatenya dari Indonesia ke Inggris. Kalo dari Inggris ke Indonesia kan masih bisa dikira- kira.” It is difficult to translate Indonesian into English. Translating English into Indonesia is easier Participant 4: “Bingung cari preposisi yang pas di bahasa Inggris, habis mirip- mirip sih ” I am confused to find the proper prepositions because they are similar Participant 6: “Ga bisa bedain penggunaan in, at, on…soalnya artinya kalau di Bahasa Indonesia hampir sama sih.” I am not able to distinguish the usage of in, at, on because their meaning in Bahasa Indonesia are similar

c. Overgeneralization

The participants had lack of knowledge in using and choosing the appropriate preposition. For example, the students did not know when to use in, at, on to express time or place. It happens because each preposition has its own rule underlying its form. Since the rules underlying them are complex, it may cause problems to the students. Its complexity leads the students to make overgeneralization to the rules. It appears in the result of interview. When the participants were asked about their difficulties in applying English preposition, two participants answered that they did not understand well the usage of English prepositions. Another PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI participant answered that she knew the English preposition but sometimes she forgot which one is the appropriate one. Participant 2: “Saya ga begitu mudeng Bahasa Inggris. Masih suka bingung kapan menggunakan at, kapan in, kapan on. Susah belajar Bahasa Inggris, banyak hapalannya. ” I do not understand English well. I am still confused when to use at, in, and on. It is hard to study English, there are a lot of material should be memorized Participant 5: “Suka lupa harus menggunakan preposisi yang mana. Kalau udah nulis gitu suka asal pakai aja yang sekiranya pas. Sebenere udah tau kalau cuma at, in, on ..tapi masih suka lupa mesti pakai preposisi yang mana kalau udah buat kalimat.” I often forgot to use the proper preposition. When I was writing I used any kind of preposition which I thought it was proper. I already knew about preposition at, in, on but I often forgot to use the proper preposition when I made a sentence PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 64

CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

In this chapter, the researcher draws conclusions of this research and provides suggestions which are dedicated to the teachers, learners, and other researchers.

A. Conclusions

This research discussed the error preposition based on the form of prepositions such as place and position; time; direction and motion; manner, agent, and instrument, which is commonly made by tenth grade students. This research also tried to find the possible causes of the error preposition. Based on the result of this research, the usage of place and position was the first rank error commonly made the students. The second rank was the form of time, and then followed by the usage of manner, agent, and instrument. The lowest rank was the form of direction and motion. The form of place and position become the first rank because the English prepositions to express place and position have the similar meaning in Bahasa Indonesia. Unfortunately, the English prepositions have its own rule underlying them. According to the result and analysis in the previous chapter, there three possible causes of error. The first was carelessness , which related to the students’ lack motivation to find out the appropriate preposition in their writing. The second was translation which related to the first language interference. Students translate PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
