a. Errors in Place and Position Form
Place and Position form was the first rank of preposition errors which was made by tenth grade student. This form had the highest percentage of error among
all forms of prepositions. Table 4.4 below shows the percentage of preposition errors in place and position form in both topics.

There was 54,62 preposition errors in place and position form which is made by tenth grade student. Most of the students did not pay enough attention on
the usage of preposition to express a place or position. Below are the examples of preposition errors made by the students.

In the usage of preposition, to describe place and position, preposition „in‟
and „inside‟ is used to express enclosure or something which being surrounded by
another thing or something. The first and the third sentence use inappropriate preposition because the writers, in this case are the students, were not surrounded
by the road or the beach. The students actually were on the surface of the road or

the beach. In the first and third sentences above, preposition „on‟ should be used
because the subject was in contact with the top surface of road and beach. Preposition
„on‟ is used to express something that in contact with the top surface of another object. The second sentence also uses an inappropriate preposition.
Preposition „at‟ is used to show the same position without specifying dimension.
In other words, the preposition „at‟ is used in unspecified dimension. Meanwhile,
the second sentence has a meaning that the subject was being surrounded by a building called hotel. The appropriate preposition for second sentence is
„in‟ as it is explained above. The last sentence also has an inappropriate preposition. As
stated in the beginning of the paragraph that preposition „inside‟ is used to express
enclosure or something which being surrounded by another thing or something. It is not suitable with the exact meaning of the sentence. The subject was not
enclosure or surrounded by something. The journey is not a concrete thing which has dimension or volume. Journey is related to movement from a place to another
place. The appropriate preposition for the last sentence is „in‟ to express direction
and motion because there is a movement with respect to an intended location. The followings are the correct preposition for the sentences above.
1 On the road we singing and to tell circumstance many.
2 Keep quite not to wake the others staying in the hotel, we tiptoed.
3 I and my younger passionate played on the beach.
4 In the journey, we singing and joking.
