236-239; ch 5; book 3. Through her manners, it can be seen that Lucie Manette is a brave person. She has shown her bravery in many occasions. Her actions for the sake of her beloved people really show that she is a brave person. She will gladly do anything for the sake of her beloved one. She is even able to risk her own safety for the sake of people around her.

4.3 Father-daughter relationship

A father-daughter relationship is an important place for a daughter to learn about relationship. According to Winnicott father-daughter relationship is an important place to learn about male-female relationship. From the relationship of a father and a daughter, a daughter will learn something about male and female relationship. In the other hand, a father-daughter relationship is also a complicated thing. If it is not handled carefully many problems will occur in a father-daughter relationship. According to Nollan and Mary both a father and a daughter must respect each other so that a good relationship is able to established. A father must also be careful in this kind of relationship because if it is not handled carefully, it can lead to an incestuous behavior. As long as a father and a daughter respect each other and wish only for the best of each other a good father-daughter relationship can be established. Fortunately that is what happens to Dr. Manette and his daughter Lucie Manette. Both of them really shows a good father-daughter relationship.

4.3.1 The relationship of Dr. Manette and Lucie Manette

The father-daughter relationship between Dr. Manette and Lucie Manette is an amazing relationship. It is amazing because both of them are willing to make a sacrifice in order to see each other live a happy life. Dr. Manette lets her daughter get married with Charles Darnay. He is also willing to risk his life by putting all his best in saving Charles Darnay from the prison. Meanwhile Lucie Manette is also willing to sacrifice her personal lives by taking care of Dr. Manette. She does not abandon her mentally ill father and even takes care of him until he is recovered. She realizes suffering from that condition; he will be unable to do everything by himself. Therefore she decides to sacrifice her personal lives and stays by her father’s side. Both of them have done their best to make sure that each other live a happy life. As a father, Dr. Manette should be a role model for his daughter, he should play his role as a father, yet he is unable to do so. After his imprisonment in France, Dr. Manette is in a state of trauma. Sometimes he will be heard walking up and down in his room repeating what happened in the prison. Sometimes he will also be seen doing his old work as a shoemaker when he gets stress. This condition is the one which makes Lucie Manette stays by his father side and render him to be unable to show his role as a father. Dr. Manette himself still tries his best to act like a father. He shows his love toward his daughter in any way he can. According to Noller and Mary 1993, p. 237 a father is walking a narrow way in the relationship between a father and a daughter. It means that in relationship between a father and a daughter, a father must be cautious for giving his love because if he gives too many loves toward his daughter, it will make the daughter’s personal development become unbalanced. Dr. Manette realizes that after being taken care of by his daughter, he has develops some kind of dependency toward his daughter and vice versa. If he lets this to continue it will eventually escalates in to an incestuous habit. He understands that it will be bad for Lucie Manette life. Therefore he makes it right by letting his daughter marry Charles Darnay so that she will be able to experience true love between a man and a woman. Meanwhile as a daughter, Lucie Manette never tastes the love of a father. She is raised by her mother alone. The reason is that her father has been put to prison since she is still an infant. Therefore when Lucie Manette hears that her father is still alive, she immediately searches her father. According to Winnicott 2007, p. 35 Father-daughter relationship is a bound or relationship made by a father and a daughter. It is an important place to learn about male-female relationship. From a father, little girls gain their first reflection of themselves as a female. The girls, then, develop a sense of acceptance or non-acceptance. Lucie Manette realizes this and therefore she takes care of her father. She realizes that as a girl she needs her father to teach her how to behave in front of a man. Furthermore she also needs to see her reflection as a female from his father. She needs to know whether her father love her or not. As a traumatized person, it is actually hard for Dr. Manette to trust other people easily. Yet, he is able to trust his daughter Lucie Manette to take care of him. According to Fromm 2006, 38-41 Fromm 2006, p. 38-41 define mothers’ role and Fathers’ role as follows: Mother has a major in recognition and a minor in adaptation. It means that a mother plays an important role in the development of children knowledge. Meanwhile, Father has a minor in recognition and a major in adaptation. It means that a father play important role in how and when to apply the knowledge that the children already have. Lucie Manette has already learn everything from her mother when she was a child therefore what remains is that adaptation that she has to learn from her father. By letting Lucie Manette to take care of him, Dr. Manette actually opens a learning chance for his daughter. By taking care of his father, Lucie Manette learns how to behave in from of a man and how to make them comfortable. She also learns how and when to apply the knowledge that she got from her mother. Another reason why Lucie Manette is willing to find her missing father is because she loves her father. Lewis, Amini, and Lannon 2000, pp. 5-6 define love as the bond that holds people together. It is a string that connects a person to another person. That is what Lucie Manette feels toward her father. There is an invisible string that connects her to her father. She just cannot abandon this string. She wants to show her love for her father. It is decided then that the first thing she must do is to make sure that her father is alright. She does not stop there; she does not only save her father to show her love. She even takes care of her mentally ill father.

4.3.1.1 The way Dr. Manette expresses his relationship with Lucie Manette

Dr. Manette has been separated from his daughter for a long time. The time he has spent in prison in France has made him mentally ill. Although he has been separated from his daughter for a long time and his trauma of being in prison haunts him, it does not stop Dr. Manette to act as a father toward Lucie Manette. He mostly acts as a father by showing his love as a father toward his daughter. He shows his love toward his daughter by doing things that he believes to be the best for his daughter. Dr. Manette is a loving person. All Dr. Manette ever wants is to see his daughter live a happy life. One thing that will make his daughter happy is marriage. Truman 2007, pp. 4-6 states that father’s love is very precise. It is perfectly focused. Dr. Manette already understands which is good and which is bad. He understands that by letting Lucie Manette to stay by his side for a longer time will eventually develop in to an incestuous habit. That kind of problem is not good for Lucie Manette personal development. Therefore he agrees for Charles Darnay to marry Lucie Manette. He has seen that Charles Darnay is a good man. Therefore he judges Charles Darnay to be worthy to marry his daughter. He is actually despising the idea of marriage, because if his daughter is married to a man it means that she will be separated from Dr. Manette. He realizes that if he lets Lucie Manette get closer than she already has it will be bad for his daughter because it can eventually grow to an incestuous habit and become a hindrance for his daughter to reach true happiness. p. 111-116; ch 10; book 2. According to Sandford and Lough 1988, p. 237 a father must be cautious for giving his love because if he gives too much love toward his daughter, it will make the daughter personal development become unbalanced. Dr. Manette understands that after 5 years taking care of him, Lucie Manette has grown too attached to him and vice versa. He realizes that this kind of thing is not good for his daughter personal development. If this kind of thing is allowed to continue, it will grow into an incestuous habit that will be bad for Dr. Manette and his daughter and will not make his daughter happy. Therefore Dr. Manette must make a hard decision by allowing Charles Darnay to marry Lucie Manette. In order to do that he suppresses his own feeling of dependency on his daughter. All that he ever wants is to see his daughter happy, and in order to do that he puts all his effort to suppress his feeling of dependency. Sandford and Lough explain many problems in father-daughter relationships have something to do with the father’s thoughts, feelings and attitudes toward women in general. There is a long-standing devaluation of women in the culture that has shaped the attitudes of most men. Our patriarchal culture sees women and feminine values as less important than men and masculine values. Fortunately for Lucie Manette, Dr. Manette has overcome that kind of point of view. Dr. Manette really loves his daughter and will never trade her daughter for anyone else. It can be proven by seeing is reaction when Charles Darnay ask Dr. Manette permission to marry Lucie Manette. From his thought which actually despises the idea of marriage one can see that Dr. Manette really loves his daughter. After some years, Dr. Manette has seen that Lucie Manette lives a happy life together with Charles Darnay. Unfortunately something terrible happens to Charles Darnay. He is taken into custody in France; Dr. Manette puts all his effort to make sure that Charles Darnay is released. He understands that Charles Darnay’s imprisonment will make his daughter sad. Therefore, he does a lot of things to save Charles Darnay. He collects some people and goes to the prison where Charles Darnay is being imprisoned and works on the way to save Charles Darnay. He even stays in the prison to make sure that Charles Darnay will not be executed p. 224-225; ch 2; book 3. Dr. Manette sees that his daughter is so sad because of her husband’s condition. Dr. Manette understands that his daughter will do anything to lighten Charles Darnay’s burden. Therefore he makes a plan and asks Lucie Manette to follow the plan. By doing the plan Charles Darnay will be able to see Lucie Manette from his prison chamber although she will not be able to see him. Lucie Manette understands that by doing this, it will make her husband happy. If there is a way to lighten her husband burden, Lucie Manette will gladly do that. Dr. Manette sees this as way to make his daughter happy therefore he proposed the plan p. 236; ch 5; book 3. He does all he can do to release Charles Darnay because he understands that by doing this, his daughter will be happy and nothing will make Dr. Manette happier than seeing that Lucie Manette’s happy. Even though Dr. Manette does everything in his power to save Charles Darnay, yet his effort go to waste. He fails to save Charles Darnay, and to make the matter worse Charles Darnay is going to be executed. Because of this, he becomes so stressed and wants to return to his old habit of making shoes again. From this part of the story, one can be sure that Dr. Manette loves Lucie Manette very much. All he ever wants is to see his daughter live a happy life. He understands that for Lucie Manette to live a happy life, she must be together with Charles Darnay. When he fails to save Charles Darnay, he realizes that his daughter will be so sad and fall to misery. Therefore he regrets that he cannot save Charles Darnay and Dr. Manette himself falls to misery p. 293; ch 12; book 3. One can see that as a father Dr. Manette loves his daughter so much. All Dr. Manette ever wants is to see his daughter live a happy live. He will do anything to make sure that Lucie Manette is happy. He shows his love by letting Lucie Manette to choose her own husband. That way he can be sure that his daughter will be happy because she chooses someone based on her own true feeling, and Dr. Manette knows that she will not regret it. He also shows his love by trying his best in saving his daughter’s husband. He has seen that his daughter live a happy life together with Charles Darnay. Therefore he puts all his effort in saving Charles Darnay. He shows his love toward his daughter by doing things that will be best for his daughter’s happiness. He understands that by doing all this things Lucie Manette happiness can be preserved.

4.3.1.2 The way Lucie Manette expresses her relationship with Dr. Manette

There is only one thing that Lucie Manette does to express her relationship with Dr. Manette and that is by showing her love for Dr. Manette. There are a lot of things that Lucie Manette does to express her love for his father. The first thing that she does to express her love for her father is by saving her father from the imprisonment in France. Even though Mr. Lorry has warned Lucie Manette that the journey will be dangerous yet her commitment remains strong. Furthermore, Mr. Lorry has also warned her that there is a chance that the prisoner in France is not her father. Despite of all the conditions that seems to be against her, yet Lucie Manette strengthen her effort and still wants to save her father p. 21-24; ch 4; book 1. Lucie Manette also shows her love by bravely approaching the prisoner in France even though Mr. Lorry and Monsieur Defarge do not dare to approach the prisoner. Mr. Lorry and Monsieur Defarge are afraid that the prisoner is dangerous and something bad might happen if they do something wrong. She is not afraid of the condition that the prisoner had and bravely approaches him. Lucie Manette even dares to stay in the room together with the prisoner only p. 33-40; ch 6; book 1. Lewis, Amini, and Lannon 2000, pp. 5-6 define love as a string that connects a person to another person. Love is the one that connects Lucie Manette and her father. Lucie Manette knows immediately that the person who is being imprisoned is her father. Therefore she knows that she needs not to be afraid of her own father. Lucie Manette dares to get close to the prisoner even having a conversation with him because she knows that her father will not harm her. Even Dr. Manette has some kind of attraction toward Lucie and starts to recognize her while he does not recognize Mr. Lorry and Monsieur Defarge. This proves that love is able to connect people even if those people are separated by distance and time. The most amazing thing that Lucie Manette does to show her love toward his father is by taking care of her mentally ill father. She always stays beside Dr. Manette and is ready in time of need. Even though for most people taking care of mentally ill person is a burden, but she does not think like that. She is so devoted to her father that she is even willing to calm her restless father. There is a time when her father is restless which happens because he remembers when he is imprisoned in France. During his restlessness, he will be seen walking up and down in his room. Lucie Manette who hears the step that Dr. Manette makes will quickly go to his father side and accompanies him until Dr. Manette mind is calm. This really shows that Lucie Manette really loves her father and will do anything to make sure that Dr. Manette will be fine p. 81-82; ch 6; book 2. Fromm 2006, pp. 1-29 states that love is an art which people seek to achieve interpersonal union. Love always implies certain basic elements which are care, responsibility, respect, and knowledge. Lucie Manette shows all aspects that are mentioned by Fromm. She shows all of those aspects while taking care of her father. She shows care when she takes care of her father because she wants his father to recover faster from his weakened state. She shows responsibility by always staying in his father side and coming in his father time of need. She shows respect when she does not restrict her father’s activity in regard of his weakened state. She does this so that her father will be able to recover and return to his old self. She shows knowledge when she really understands that Dr. Manette really needs her company to be able to recover from his weakened state. She answers to his father needs by staying at her father side and taking care of her father. Therefore it cannot be denied that Lucie Manette really loves her father and will do anything for Dr. Manette’s sake. According to Winnicott 2007, p. 4 a daughter also needs a certain amount of her father’s eros. She needs to know he loves her, and she is nourished by his feelings for her, his playing with her, even his flirtatiousness with her. Lucie Manette realizes this. She realizes that she wants to be loved by his father therefore she searches for her father. When she finds him in a traumatized state, she does not give up. Deep down in her heart, she really wants to be loved by her father. Therefore she is willing to take care of her traumatized father until he is able to overcome his trauma. She will also do anything for her father’s sake so that her father will be able to love her. From this point, one can understand that Lucie Manette really wants to be loved by her father and she will do anything for her father sake until the day her father can love Lucie Manette mutually. Both Dr. Manette and Lucie Manette really prove that they are indeed father and daughter. One can see that both of them have a strong father-daughter relationship. Both of them loves each other and will do anything for each other sake. Even their relationship has grown in to a state that if they ever be separated, each of them will fall in to despair. Dr. Manette shows to the world what a father should do for his daughter’s happiness. Lucie Manette also shows to the world what a daughter should do for her father’s happiness. 52

The suggestions come up as the last part that provides useful information about the related study.

5.1 Conclusions

There are two parts that can be concluded from the analysis. Those are the description of Dr. Manette and her daughter Lucie Manette and their relationship as father and daughter and how they show their love toward each other. Based on the analysis, it can be summarized that Dr. Manette and Lucie Manette are two of the major characters in the story because the whole story tells about their life. Whereas Lucie Manette is portrayed as a static character because she does not experience major characteristics change throughout the story. Her characteristics remain the same from the beginning through the end. Based on Murphy’s theory Dr. Manette is characterized as a traumatized and dependent person. Fortunately, because of her daughter compassion and love, he becomes a smart, brave, loving, and independent person. His first characteristic is described as a traumatized person. Whenever Dr. Manette gets stressed he always reverts back to his old job in his imprisonment as a shoemaker. He is very
