This chapter consists of conclusions, implications, and suggestions. The first part is conclusions which summarize the description of Dr. Manette and his
daughter Lucie Manette and how they show their love toward each other. The second part is the implications of the study in the field of education in the relation
with the major subject of English education. The suggestions come up as the last part that provides useful information about the related study.
5.1 Conclusions
There are two parts that can be concluded from the analysis. Those are the description of Dr. Manette and her daughter Lucie Manette and their relationship
as father and daughter and how they show their love toward each other. Based on the analysis, it can be summarized that Dr. Manette and Lucie Manette are two of
the major characters in the story because the whole story tells about their life. Dr. Manette is portrayed as a dynamic character because he experienced major
characteristics change throughout the story. Whereas Lucie Manette is portrayed as a static character because she does not experience major characteristics change
throughout the story. Her characteristics remain the same from the beginning through the end.
Based on Murphy’s theory Dr. Manette is characterized as a traumatized and dependent person. Fortunately, because of her daughter compassion and love,
he becomes a smart, brave, loving, and independent person. His first characteristic is described as a traumatized person. Whenever Dr. Manette gets stressed he
always reverts back to his old job in his imprisonment as a shoemaker. He is very
dependent on his daughter even to the length of disliking the idea of his daughter marriage. However because of his daughter compassion and love he is able to
overcome his trauma and become a better person. His next characteristic is smart. His work as a physician and the fact that many people seek his guidance become a
solid proof that he is a smart person. He also shows the characteristic of a brave person. He shows his bravery when in France by trying to save Charles Darnay in
any way he can. After a long time being taken care of by his daughter, Dr. Manette develops the characteristic of a loving father. He shows his love for his
daughter by making sure that his daughter lives a happy life and he will do anything for his daughter sake. His last characteristic is independent. Eventually
Dr. Manette is able to overcome his trauma and become an independent person. He even allows Charles Darnay to marry his daughter and convince his daughter
that the marriage is the right thing to do. Based on Murphy’s theory Lucie Manette is characterized as an attractive,
loving, compassionate and brave person. Her first characteristic is described as an attractive person. She is able to attract a lot of people to visit her house in order to
see her attractiveness. Even Charles Darnay, Sidney Carton, and Mr. Stryver are attracted to her and want to become her lover. Second, she is a loving person. She
loves her father so much even to the length of willing to stay beside her father always. Her next characteristic is compassionate. Because of her father condition,
she is willing to take care of her traumatized father even though it will be a burden for her personal life. She is a brave person. She dares to go to France which has
become a dangerous place because of the revolution to save her husband.
As a father and a daughter, Dr. Manette and Lucie Manette really love each other. They show a good example of father-daughter relationship. Not only
they take care of each other but they are also willing to do sacrifice to make sure that each other will live a happy life. Dr. Manette agrees to Charles Darnay
marriage proposal even though he know that by doing it, he will be separated from Lucie Manette and become lonely. In the other hand Lucie Manette is also
willing to sacrifice her personal live to take care of her traumatize father and stays by her father side. Both of them also respect each other which according to Nollan
and Mary is needed in a good father-daughter relationship. Therefore they are able to live a happy live and become a better person.
Lucie Manette really loves her father and she is willing to do anything to show her love for her father. Lucie Manette does a lot of thing to show her love
toward her father throughout the story. She goes to France to find her father even though where she goes is a dangerous place. The most amazing thing that she
does for her father is by taking care of her traumatized father. When she takes care of her father she shows care, responsibility, respect, and knowledge which are the
basic elements of love. What Lucie Manette does for her father throughout the story really shows that she loves her father so much. Dr. Manette also loves his
daughter so much. All Dr. Manette ever wants is to see his daughter live a happy life. Therefore he will do anything for his daughter sake even though if that is a
dangerous thing. However, Dr. Manette realizes that both of he and his daughter has grown too attached to each other and it is a bad thing. He realizes that his
daughter can never find happiness if she spends her entire life by his father side. Therefore Dr. Manette shows his love in another way. He lets Charles Darnay to
marry his daughter. He believes that Charles Darnay will be able to make his daughter live a happy life. He does it because he loves his daughter so much and
nothing will make Dr. Manette happier more than seeing his daughter live a happy life.
