convinces his daughter that the marriage is a good idea and he will be alright if his daughter leaves his side. Although the night after the marriage, he returns to his
habit of making shoes again, but eventually he is able to overcome his trauma pp. 159-163; ch 17; book 2. From that point forward Dr. Manette has become a
different person with a magnificent personality. Later on, Dr. Manette even becomes a brave man by doing anything in order to save Charles Darnay who is
being imprisoned in France. It can be conluded that Dr. Manette is able to be an independent person.
Through his mannerism one can see that he has changed to become an independent person. How he show his love for his daughter either by agreeing to
the marriage and saving his daughter’s husband has become a proof that he is an independent person.
4.1.5 Brave
Dr. Manette is a brave person. He shows his bravery in France during his effort in saving Charles Darnay. Immediately after his arrival in France he
manages to rally some people and march to Bastille prison where Charles Darnay is being imprisoned. Historically that time France is actually in a state of
revolution and it was dangerous to go outside especially for foreigner. Yet Dr. Manette does not heed the danger and strengthen his resolve to save Charles
Darnay. He even dares to stay in the prison to make sure that Charles Darnay will not be executed pp. 224-226; ch 2; book 3.
Eventually he is able to save Charles Darnay and the happiness comes.
However, it does not last long. Charles Darnay is put again in prison with a different charge. Once again Dr. Manette shows his bravery by doing his best in
saving Charles Darnay. This time Dr. Manette uses a different approach by visiting the prosecutor and the president and talks to them p. 288; ch 11; book 3.
Those acts of bravery cannot be done unless Dr. Manette has changed for the better. From his mannerism one can see that he has become a brave person. He
shows that he is a brave person by trying his best in saving Charles Darnay. Historically France during the time of revolution was a dangerous place. People
would be captured by the nationalist using a false accusation. However, he is able to show his bravery in that kind of condition because he has change to be a brave
person. From his personality’s description, people can see that Dr. Manette is a
dynamic character. He has changed from a traumatized dependent person into a brave and independent person. He manages to overcome his trauma and
eventually become a better person with great personalities. With his change, he also becomes a dependable person who gain honors from his relatives.
