A. CLASSROOM OBSERVATIONS

Classroom Observation 1 Tuesday, September 17 th , 2013XI-GACObservation 1 17 learners  7 males and 10 females Class: AE-RW Time: 08.55-10.30 Thursday English morning Class was started after breaking time. The teacher was ready before the learners come. One by one of the learners sat down on their own chair while making a joke. The atmosphere in the class was very interesting. Today learners did not wear uniform. They wore their own uniform. The teacher opened the class by greeting “Good morning class. How are you today?” and by asking the condition of the learners. All of the learners responded it. After greeting, the teacher announced that the competence test score got by learners. There were two learners that have great score. “The learners of the day who got the best mark will give a prize.” He showed the prizes and mentioned the learners’ name. Then, he gave it to two learners who got the best mark in the competence test. The learners looked very happy. They took the prize and responded it by saying thanks to the teacher and shared it to their friends. Learners asked to do the process of learning and teaching to the outside of the class but the teacher asked them to stay in the class because it was hot outside. They decided to continue the lesson in the class. The teacher gave motivation to the learners about the target for their writing test. Before talking about the topic of the day, the teacher began the class by playing the game. He explained about the rule of “word chance” game. He asked to the learners to create some words or a phrase into a sentence. One by one should arrange the phrase mentioned by the teacher. The phrases of the game were Sweet sauce and pink dress. The learners were given 3 minutes to arrange the phrases into a sentence and the other learners should not give a similar sentence. Before the game was played, some learners made sure about the rule. One of them asked about the length of the sentence. Then, any other learners asked the teacher to repeat the rule of the game. After repeating the explanation about the rule, the teacher started the game. All the learners participated in the game while joking and talking with their peer but they still focused on the game. One by one of the learners tried to arrange words. If the words had been mentioned before, teacher or their friends remained one another. The game process was for 20 minutes. After finishing the game, the teacher asked the learners to do some exercises on their handbook. They did it by themselves while discussing about the answer with the other friend. One of them played music and sometimes some of the learners followed the lyrics of the song while doing the task. After they submitted their work to the teacher, they were asked to correct the task together by the teacher. The teacher asked to change the answer to the other one. Then, one by one mentioned the answer sheet and the other ones gave some feedback. They discussed the answer together guided by the teacher. After discussing the answer, the teacher gave the paper back to the owner. The teacher then explained about the topic correlated with the handbook task. Some learners asked some questions. Then, the teacher explained it more detail and gave some examples. He asked the learners’ understanding. Knowing the learners understood the materials, the teacher asked to the learners to read some articles by themselves from internet correlated with the next topic that will be discussed. The class was closed by saying Hamdalah and the learners took their breaking time. In the process of teaching and learning the learners kept to speak English consistently. They looked active and enjoyed the lesson. Classroom Observation 2 Wednesday, September 18, 2013XII-GAPObservation 2 18 learners = 10 males and 8 females Class= AE-LS Time= 07.25 - 08.55 Wednesday morning, English Class was the first subject given. The teacher came early in the morning, prepared the audio and checked the loudness of the audio. Some learners came on time that is started at 07.25 but the other ones came rather late. The position of chairs in the class was a round formation. There were 18 learners consisted of 10 boys and 8 girls wearing uniform. After stating Basmallah to open the class, the teacher asked about the previous lesson to the learners. The learners looked enthusiasm to answer the question. One by one of the learners tried to explain the material. The teacher asked them about cigarette based on the previous material given as one of controversial cases. He invited the learners to answer the questions. Then, the teacher enlarged the questions. He asked about the definition of cigarette, why the people consume it, legal or illegal thing and how to control or stop it. He also asked about the agreement and disagreement of the learners and discussion happened. He gathered learners’ opinion about the benefit, positive negative of cigarette and the religion point of view of it. The learners participated actively in the discussion. Some learners were more active than the other ones. The most active learner waved his hand and answered the question given about the point of view of region about cigarette. In the middle of explanation, he asked some words that he did not know in Bahasa Indonesia “They gak bisa menahan nafsu to consume it”. One of his friends translated it to him. The active learner continued his explanation in English fluently. The teacher pointed a girl who kept silent and asked her opinion about forbidden medicine. She answered the question well. The learners enjoyed the class, although some learners chatted something but they still focused on the teacher. Then, one by one of the learners were asked the same question for checking their opinion. They answered it and enjoyed the discussion. The teacher paid attention on learner’s speaking. The teacher asked to the learner to open the module of AE-LS on page 24. The topic of the day was about white lie correlated with lie detector. The teacher played the audio and asked the learners to listen it. He replayed the audio two times. After listening, he explained the topic about white lie, asked definition and examples, the persons who do it. In the middle of explanation a learner came late followed by two other learners. The teacher and the learners in the class gave applause for the late learners. They gave a permission letter and explained the reason for their lateness to the teacher. Teacher continued and asked the learners to open a book and pointed a learner to read a text. After reading, the teacher asked some questions and asked the learners to reread it carefully. Then the teacher checked learners’ understanding by checking one by one of the learners in the class. The teacher explained more about what they should do and gave duration or limited time for 10 minutes to do the task. He directed the learner to formulate questions correlated with text read before. Then he walked around to check their work. Learners focused on the task given seriously, sometimes they made a joke. The other ones were doing the work while listening a song from a mobile phone. There was one learner spoke in Bahasa Indonesia, but the teacher kept speaking English and remained him to speak English. A learner asked question about the procedure doing the task. And the teacher explained it. “Just imagine your question will be answered in presentation”, he said. The teacher replayed the audio and asked the question list to the learners about lie detector. Then teacher asked the argumentation and checked the sum of learners answers. Sometimes the teacher pointed a learner to answer the question mixed of a boy and a girl. The other learners gave some feedbacks and the teacher concluded and gave additional opinion. The learners spoke English fluently. They looked very confident but sometimes a few of them spoke Bahasa Indonesia to their peer about other context. Before closing the class, the teacher remained to the learners to learn by themselves about a case opinion their argumentation. They were asked to search from some references from book or included from internet and asked to express their original arguments. Finally the teacher closed the class by restating Hamdalah followed by the learners. In the breaking time, a learner who had just come from Malaysia in a competition program shared chocolates and some candies to their friends. They tasted and enjoyed it. Classroom Observation 3 Wednesday, September 18, 2013X-GACObservation 3 19 learners= 7 males and 12 females Time= 08.55 – 10.00 Class= AE-LS Entering class 10, the teacher put his stuffs on the table and opened the class by stating salam. He looked at a learner who didn’t wear the uniform and asked the reason to him. The learner explained the reason and gave him a permission card from security. The position of chairs was letter U. The teacher started the topic of the day by asking some questions about presentation. “What is needed in presentation?” All learners looked enthusiasm to answer it. One by one of the learners answered the question. “intonation, gesturebody language, topic, diction, confidence, consideration, visual appearancearts etc” “Why we talk about presentation, because we will do that after breaking time.” Then he explained about the step to make a presentation while the teacher looked at around to make all of learners focus on him. The teacher asked to the learners to find out an interesting topic and made an outline. After all, they decided to use “favorite personal” as the topic today. Learners then asked and discussed about the topic with other friends. Some learners still chatted and made a joke. The class looked relax. The teacher wrote how to make an outline. He gave a guideline and made a mind map on the white board by explaining the strategy how to make the presentation run systematically. He made a loader intonation when he knew some learners sill didn’t focus on him and chatted with other friends. And then he limited the time to ask the learners to do the outline and presentation. The time for making and outline and preparing presentation was 3-5 minutes. In the class, some learners sometimes spoke in Bahasa Indonesia, but the teacher consistently spoke in English. Then the teacher walked around to check learners’ task. All learners kept silent awhile to concentrate to make their own outline. The time gave for preparing was over. The teacher asked to the learners who wanted to be the first speaker. One of them, a girl, stand in front of the class and presented a topic about “my sister”. She explained it briefly. Her English is very fluently. After finishing it, the teacher asked the other learners to give feedback to her. Then the last speaker pointed one of other learners to have presentation. 3 boys had their presentation after her. The second speaker gave presentation well but still got comment from their friend, the third speaker was excellent. He could explain the topic well, by using good eye contact, gesture, and intonation amazingly so that after presentation all learners gave a big applause and gave positive feedback to him. The forth boy speaker got his turn and still made some grammatical errors. He was then got some comments to improve his presentation from his friends. Because the boy still needed to improve his grammar. And the last speaker was a girl pointed out by the teacher. She tried to explain her topic although she looked like nervous. She rather lost control and her presentation got some comments from her friends. There were 5 presentations at the time, everyone looked like enjoy to the class although it was still founded some grammatical error in the class. But one another supported their friends and enjoyed the activity. They could speak English well to their teacher actively whereas there are still in the first level in the program. Before closing the class, the teacher concluded the presentation and gave support to the learners. Classroom Observation 4 Tuesday, September 17 th , 2013XI-GAC-BSObservation 4 20 learners= 15 males and 17 females Class= BS Time= 10.45-12.15 The teacher entered the class while accosting hallo to her learners’ friendly. Before starting the class, she asked to the learners to arrange learners’ position. After opening the class by stating Basmalah, she shared her experience in Malaysia because she has just come from Malaysia to join in a seminar. She said that the system of education in Malaysia has been good whereas almost 60 schools there are subsides by the government. She tried to motivate the learners to be better in learning process and do the best. She continued by asking about the previous materials given. The learner answered the question. They really paid attention with her although some learners behind something chatted with the other friend but they still focused on the teacher. The class was conducive and comfortable. She asked the learners to read a text correlated with the economy policy. One learner sat down on the floor but she let him to enjoy the position. After reading, they discussed it together. The teacher guided the discussion by asking the learners some questions. One by one responded it. Sometimes the teacher pointed out the learner who was talking with her friend. All of the learners participated answering the question given. Sometimes they asked to the teacher about the economic case. Finally the class was closed by stating Hamdalah.
