THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE INTERACTIVE PRINCIPLES IN CURRICULUM 2013

observation data analysis have presented us three 3 categories. Those categories were: unearthing comprehension, extrinsic motivation and giving autonomy to learners. Unearthing comprehension consists of giving explanation, doing exercise and reviewing material. Extrinsic motivation consists of controlling learner’s language and relaxing atmosphere. Giving autonomy to learners consist of holding independent learning and creating learner’s creativity. In English learning and teaching interaction between learners and teacher, between learner and learner, between learner and people outside the school, there are three interaction emerged. In order to make interactive and effective learning and teaching English, those interactions must be present.

B. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE INTERACTIVE PRINCIPLES IN CURRICULUM 2013

In previous section, The research has been presented several concepts categorized into kinds of interaction and English learning and teaching interaction. In this section, it discusses about dimension of English learning and teaching interaction that reflects curriculum 2013. Through this narration, we will know whether English learning and teaching at SMA Internasional Budi Mulia Dua, especially GAC General Assessment Certificate class, has implemented curriculum 2013 substantively or not. In chapter I, It has been explained that GAC class is international class that adapt curriculum from ACT Assessment Certificate Test from USA. In GAC class, every teacher uses English for instructional communication in many subjects. The school doesn’t declare that they follow curriculum 2013 that is Ministry of Education product. But, we will see whether curriculum 2013 is also implemented at the school in learning and teaching process. To explain the accordance of curriculum 2013 with English learning and teaching interaction at SMA Internasional Budi Mulia Dua, some data taken from interviews and observations are correlated or grouped with the focuses of learning in curriculum 2013. There are four 4 focuses of learning in curriculum 2013: 1. Empowering the implementation of competency-based curriculum Curriculum 2013 that is competency-based curriculum essentially has been reflected in implementation of learning and teaching at SMA Internasional Budi Mulia Dua. The vision and mission of the school state clearly that the learner is regarded to be subject in learning and teaching process. Some programs and activities are created to make learners active and participative in the class. Some efforts are held to ‘open learners’ eyes’ to know the real issues and problem happened in society, therefore they have to participate in building world life. These motivate them to be critical persons. Actually, we have implemented curriculum 2013 since the school was held. Curriculum can be changed for many times, but we always focus on the development of student’s competency. We have clear vision and mission to make students to be critical, have social intelligence, and to be a part of world citizen. Our motto is how to have fun in the school and how the lessons can be active because active learning is emphasized in curriculum 2013. May be the school looks different at administrative one but the substance of it has been running since the school held DPA. 7. The implementation of CBC is also reflected in activities in the school that not only gives theoretical thing but also practical thing that essential with their character. The school gives and facilitates information about university concept. Program underpinning this focus is fieldtrip that includes visiting campus and inviting expert in seminar for learners. In this program, senior high school learners of BMD have to know the concept of university that they will pass after finishing the research. University preparation is our spirit. So, we give skills to the students to make them understand about the university concept. So, they can choose the major in undergraduate program, they know their orientation, where they should continue their study and they know their concentration and how their preparation DPA. 4. Another program is home stay. In this program, learners can feel the real life of society because they stay for a week to know the way of life of society and look for a problem happened. They can improve their knowledge, skill and attitude by controlling their teacher. There is also home stay program conducted abroad. This program is also very semester. For this semester we hold it in Swiss. Previous one was in Praha. This is exchange student program. We go there, and they go here 2 nd TA.1. To support their competency English is used in teaching and learning process. The learners use English as a second language at the school so that they can use English in their daily activities in communication with their friends and use it for other purposes. It is because there are some qualifications needed in order to the process of teaching and learning at GAC can run well. English is used as an instruction medium, so English is the standard one of the test. DPA.7 The teacher and learners control the language in using English in the class. The learners got a lot of feedback from the teacher and also their peers. 2. Empowering knowledge, skill and attitude holistically In curriculum 2013, subject matter must be relevant with competency needed, more essential and suitable for children development. At SMA Internasional Budi Mulia Dua, English is used in learning and teaching process. Because the goal of the school is preparing the learners to enter university and participating in global competition, the learners learn English that divided into two classes based on related skills, namely Academic English-Listening Speaking AE-LS and Academic English-Reading Writing AE-RW. The learners also learn Chinese for the other language. SIL is one of interesting subject that make the learners “aware” with their orientation at the future. The material taught in SIL is soft skill, such as how to motivate the student personality, self reflection, time management and how to give presentation. In the end, there is an interview to prepare them facing higher education or study at university. C-TA1 Programs and activities hold in the school purposed to improve learners’ knowledge, skill and improve their attitude. They got social, science, the guidance of research and so on. Then, internally they have to know their talent and interest. Externally, learners learn insight and information about all aspects of life. We hold some programs to realize on our expectation for them. DPA.8 Indoor activities are learning and teaching activities, workshop, seminar or discussion forum inviting the experts to share the knowledge and for outdoor activities are apprentice, social work, camp, fieldtrip, social research, out bond and so on. Those activities will encourage their interest. DPA.9 At BMD, the learners will be given motivation to see the world. They go to school because of their choice. In Junior high school, there is English Proficiency Program EPP to prepare the learners to continue their study to GAC to improve their skills in English to get quality learners. DPA.17 3. Empowering student centered learning. This focus is applied by giving learners autonomy in doing exercise, task or project. There are many programs underpinning this focus, such as presentation, discussion, role play, debate, reading, writing journal, writing report and listening to audio. Lesson is not organized only by listening teacher explanation, but also there is involvement of learners actively. All learners are given opportunity to express their opinion. Generally, I teach speaking and listening. Firstly the set up plan should be detail because it is correlated with complex and various activities. In every lesson I involve learners to be active in speaking and listening skills, for instance they can understand and capture the substances from recording or when they communicate with their friends in the class. The skills should be combined between speaking and listening every meeting. The learners will get chance to give their performance in individual or group activities. 1 st TA.1 The learners were focused on various activities to dig their skills and also programs hold in the school. They interacted with the other persons in the school and also the persons outside of the school to develop their understanding and also experiences. The school is created some programs and activities that make the learners enjoy with the agendas. Indoor activities are learning and teaching activities, workshop, seminar or discussion forum inviting the experts to share the knowledge and for outdoor activities are apprentice, social work, camp, fieldtrip, social research, out bond and so on. Those activities will encourage their interest. DPA.9 The process always focuses on how to make learners happy and enjoy with the lesson. It depends on the exploration of the teacher of the subject. The teacher can use indoor or outdoor activity. DPA.10 4. Empowering assessment of process and result Assessment is a part of learning and teaching process. At SMA Internasional Budi Mulia Dua, the assessment process is based on the curriculum used. There are four forms of assessment every semester that can be seen inside textbook from GAC class. Text books contain material and process of learning, system of assessment and also target competency. For example, in academic English, assessment is in form of role play, group work, presentation and listening test. The assessment event consists of four forms, namely role play, group work, presentation and listening test that will be given feedback from their friends. The point of the class is to develop learners’ critical thinking of a problem 1 st TA.10. We have 4 assessments in the class. C11 L3A11 It is also restated by deputy that there are four assessments in every semester. They are hold in reviewing materials from the teachers. There are 4 times of assessment event. It is shared by the teacher in the beginning of the semester. The learners know what they will do from the beginning to the end. It is well-prepared. DPA.13 Some activities are also hold as form of assessment. The teachers assessed the learners based on activities or programs that they have. The teachers also gave some accumulation of the reflection to make learners understand the process of learning and they can assess themselves. We review the previous lesson, and guide the next topic. I usually start with some questions or a story to invite them to think about the topic prepared. The learners are involved in the process of practical things. I take some assessments from that. 1 st TA.2 Individual project and group project, for example; role play, a report of fieldtrip and presentation. The role play adapt a movie but with different conversation. They must describe a thing. They will also make an advertisement and news item. All of the project will be evaluated by their friends. So peer feedback is useful to make them know their mistake. 2 nd TA.7 In assessment event I give her or him accumulation of peer feedback given before by his or her friends in role play, individual presentation and other activities. Every learner mostly is motivated under her or his friends spell. 1 st TA.9 In GAC class, the assessments can be seen in the handbook given from ACT as a guideline for the teacher and the learners to control the process of teaching and learning. There is a guideline, module, assessment event that they must receive. They were drilled to write journal to reflect and familiar with writing. They must finish 15 journals in one year. Writing journal about motivation, study independent, etc. The topics are various, such as self reflection, independent learning and learner type. Journal design diary, but it is more formal. C-TA2 The assessment is from our module, sometimes presentation form or a kind of project. C11 L4A11 From the explanation above, we can see that curriculum 2013 essentially has been implemented in English learning and teaching at SMA Internasional Budi Mulia Dua. Four focuses of learning using the interactive principles in curriculum 2013 are reflected in the school essentially by many programs and activitie. Doing exercise by independent learning, building creativity of learner and giving autonomy of learner are underpinning the implementation of essentiality of curriculum 2013. 83 CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
