56 them. For the exercise, they suggested it shout be emphasized an oral exercises. They were eager to practice more through cooperative learning. The variety of cooperative learning activities was needed in order to make them keep attention to learn English.

b. The Result of the Interview

The interview was to gather more information about how to design the speaking class based on the learners‘ perception. The data from the interview contributed a lot to design the materials. Furthermore, from the interview, the writer attained important information which was presented in the following discussion. 1 The use of English for the staff of Bantul CBR In Bantul CBR‘s office, there was no specific day of using English as a communicative language, but realizing that the office had a good relation with foreign donators, the staff was forced to have a habit to use English when they were presenting program and its result to the foreign donators. They said that having ability to communicate using English is needed. It was to explain the program that will be done, report the program that had been done, answer the phone call, and hopefully have a habit of using English as a communicative way inside their office. 2 The difficulties when using English to communicate Based on the interview, the staff had difficulties on using English to communicate because of lack of vocabularies, afraid to make grammatical errors, and having a paradigm that English was difficult to learn-read-speak. 57 So far, they had solved their problem in their difficultness of using English to communicate. Using English - Indonesian dictionaries was the solution when they did not know some English words. Hence, according to the learners, they usually forced them selves to speak English in the presentation program although there were a lot of mistakes in pronouncing some English words, using verb, and preposition. Moreover, some of them were lack of confidence when speaking English. 3 The importance of having ability using English to communicate Having ability to communicate using English is very important for the staff of Bantul CBR. The staff gave some reasons as follows: a The funding were always foreign donators b The were a lot of information from other cou ntry related to CBR‘s program c Several discussion about the program used English d A lot of reading text were in English e The important of having self ability of English, considering that there was no English - Indonesian translator in the office. 4 The way to learn English The learners gave a positive answer that learning English needed friends because friends could be the partner to speak and evaluator of the learning progression. Moreover, a group discussion was also the answer to learn English because a lot of information could be gained completely in group. 58 The target needs also would be presented in order to gain sufficient data. The result of the target needs which were taken from the questionnaires and interview could be seen in table 4.2. Further the writer presented a framework for analyzing learning needs based on the target needs. Learning needs is the specific content of target which consists of six points Huchinson and Waters, 1987:55, those are: 1 What is the language needed? The language is needed for work. It is called English for occupational. 2 How will the language be used? The language will be used in face to face, group discussion, and presentations. It will be informal conversation in speaking activities. 3 What will the content areas be? The su bject will be the daily activities in Bantul CBR‘s office. They are in the Mid Beginner Level. 4 Whom will the learners use the language with? The learners will use the language with the foreign donators and also among the staff members of Bantul CBR. 5 When will the language be used? The language will be used in Bantul CBR‘s office and Karina‘s office. 6 When will the language be used? The language will be used when presenting Bantul CBR‘s program, reporting the result of Bantul CBR‘s program, even have habit to use English to communicate among the staff in an English day in their office.
