The Result of the Questionnaire

53 gathered data from the questionnaires and interview were the needs used to design the English speaking materials. There were two main data gained from the needs analysis. The first one was the questionnaire results, while the second one was the interview results with the staff of Bantul CBR. Moreover, the results were presented as follows.

a. The Result of the Questionnaire

The questionnaires were distributed on September 15 th , 2008 together with holding informal interview to the staff of Bantul CBR. Based on the distributed questionnaires, the writer found the data that there were 20 males and 10 females. Their ages were between 21 - 43 years old. Talking about the work experience, because CBR‘s office is new, most of them had become the staff of Bantul CBR for 1 - 2 years. For education background, 1 person 3.3 graduated from Elementary School, 9 30 from Senior High School, 9 30 from Academy, and 11 36.7 from University. It answered the first questions of the questionnaires. The clear description about the respondents could be seen as follows. They had a good background to learn English. But this would be clearer that the staff of Bantul CBR needed to learn English from the several questions distributed as questionnaires to them. In the first question, the respondents were asked about their education background. The detail explanation had been explained above see table 4.1. The first question was followed by the second question that asked whether they had learned English or had not learned English yet. There were 29 96.7 respondents answered that they had learned English from many kinds of way. The writer got the data that 96.7 had experienced learning English from school, 80 from school and taking English course, 33.3 from school and teaching English, and 33.3 from school and also learn English by their selves. The answers of the next question showed that 21 respondents 70 realized that English was very important as one of the communication media. The reasons were that being able to speak English was the must in their work realizing that their works were related to foreign donators 56.7 . They 26.7 said that knowing English and being able to speak it could make a good progress about their English skills. Continuing by the next questions ―How do you feel when you learn English‖, the respondents answered that 60 enjoyed and were happy to learn English but they 66.7 said that learning English was difficult because of lacking of vocabularies 30, incorrect pronunciation 23.3 , being afraid to make an error 23.3 , being ashamed to speak English 20 , grammatical 55 error 20 , and being lazy to learn English 6.7 . By this explanation, the writer concluded that actually the respondents were having happiness and enjoyable in learning English but according to them, learning English was a difficult way because of the reason above. The next question was ―How did you learn English‖. This question indicated their experience when learning English. There were 36.7 answered that they learn English by their selves, 36,7 experienced learning English with partners or group, 53.3 learned English tutorial with teachers, 10 learned English by reading English books, and 3.3 with foreigners. Their experience indicated that to encourage them to learn English, the writer needed to design attractive materials with various activities. It needed a lot of practice speaking English 100 respondents said it with a good learning technique 100 . The last question was the respondents‘ opinion that practicing speaking to partners was the good learning technique in learning English 53.3 . They 46.7 added that besides practicing speaking with partners, it needed learning in group such as discussion to share information. Hence, the last question assumed that cooperative learning was the appropriate method to achieve communicative competence. Related to the design materials, the respondents suggested the materials should be interesting, simple and practical. They realized that they had different background of knowledge so although they experienced learning English before, they still need to learn English with the effective materials in order to help them easy to communicate their daily communication to foreign donator, even among 56 them. For the exercise, they suggested it shout be emphasized an oral exercises. They were eager to practice more through cooperative learning. The variety of cooperative learning activities was needed in order to make them keep attention to learn English.
