I helped him to stand and then offered my arm to Isaac, Building him past furniture that suddenly seemed intrusive, realizing that, for the first time in
years, I was the healthiest person in the room.
Green, 2012:14 When she was visiting Isaac, she guides him to walk in his own house. As Isaac
is blind he cannot see anything so every furniture is blocking his way. Hazel feels that she was the healthiest person in the room and glad that she can live until the day.
I sped up Ditch Road past flashing yellow lights, going too fast partly to reach him and partly in the hopes a cop would pull me over and give me an
excuse to tell someone that my dying boyfriend was stuck outside of a gas station with a malfunctioning G-tube
. But no cop showed up to make my decision for me. Green, 2012:18
When Augustus got stuck in a gas station, Hazel tries to help him as fast as possible. She did not mind the risk of speeding and may be pulled over by a cop. She
cannot deny that she is worried about him and she is afraid of what happens if she is late.
After Augustus died, she realizes that no one’s been responsible for her loss and she must live her life until the day ends.
“My name is Hazel. Augustus Waters was the great star-crossed love of my life. Ours was an epic love story, and I won’t be able to get more than a sentence
into it without disappearing into a puddle of tears. Gus knew. Gus knows. I will not tell you our love story, because
—like all real love stories—it will die with us, as it should
. I’d hoped that he’d be eulogizing me, because there’s no one I’d rather have . . . . . . “Some infinities are bigger than other infinities. A
writer we used to like taught us that. There are days, many of them when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I’m likely to
get, and God, I want more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I
wouldn’t trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful.”

Green, 2012:20 The day Augustus died, Hazel implies to herself about her feelings about her
loss. Although he’s died, their memories will stay with her no matter if he’s there or not. Their moments has taught her about suffering and love. Whatever suffering she
need to deal with is compensated by how much he taught her about the memories they been together.
She’s thankful for the time she got to be with him whatever it ends and she feels grateful as she can meet Augustus and finally resolve her personal
potential.

CHAPTER V CONCLUSION
This chapter deals with the conclusion of the research. The conclusion is drawn based on data analysis dealing with the major characters individual psychology and
her development progress based on Adler’s and Maslow’s theories used in the
analysis.
A. Kinds of life perfection that gives meaning to Hazel.
This research identifies 4 kinds of life perfection that gives meaning to Hazel found in the novel.
1. Knowing the ending of An Imperial Affliction
Hazel wants to know the ending of An Imperial Affliction. It is a novel that reflects Hazel’s life and inspires her in many ways. As a reflection of herself, it
encourages her to live and motivates her to email the author so she knows the ending. Her wishes to be going to Amsterdam is to meet the author, although
she gets the answers later when Augustus dies. 2.
Making her parents happy Hazel realizes that she does not have anybody cares for her except her parents.
She does not have any friends who support her in her hard times. Her parents
53
care is inevitable for her, and she tries to thank them for the struggle they did to keep her alive when she wants to die.
3. Minimizing casualties of her death
Hazel wants to minimize the casualties of her death, as she compare herself as a grenade who can blow anytime and wound all people nearby. She did not want
to leave a markscar when she dies. 4.
Being closer with Augustus Waters Hazel recognizes Augustus as the one who meant to her after her parents, and
she wants it to last forever. Her experience with him from the beginning create undeniable feelings between them. Their relationship shapes Hazel personal
development, which guides her in taking some decisions in her life.
B. Hazel’s struggles in getting her life perfection.
Hazel’s struggles in getting her life perfection are distributed into four categories; going to Amsterdam to meet her favorite author, doing medication and
stay healthy, trying to avoid many casualties if she dies, and taking care of Augustus. Those kinds of Hazel’s struggles in getting her life perfection is a proof that she can
gain her own perfection although she may appear fragile and incapable of doing so. Her struggles is a proof of her dedication in fulfilling her life perfection.
54
Hazel’s choice of life perfection shows her personal development from the beginning to the end of the story. She is transformed from a self-centered girl to a
moral one, who tries to live her life as it meant to be. Her experiences taught her to keep progressing whatever problems she may face.
In short , Hazel’s struggle represents consistency and determination above her
physical limitation. She finally resolves her problems by showing her struggles and abilities in gaining her life perfections. In the end of the story, she finally turns out to
be a self-actualized girl who lacks prejudice and accepts the facts of what have she is been into.
