2. What is the slab morphology beneath the ocean-continent convergent margin
transition? Is the slab torn and, if so, can we say how the tear has evolved? 3. How does the subaerial and submarine topographic expression of initial
continental collision vary laterally across the Banda arc transition? How does this topography relate to the underlying lithospheric structure?
4. How do along-arc variations in lithospheric and crustal structure, including the extent of subducted continental lithosphere, modulate and inluence
the coupling and interactions between the deep mantle and surface deformation? To help answer these questions, a multidisciplinary research
team has been assembled to constrain a sophisticated dynamical model of regional collision and subduction by passive seismology, topography analysis,
geomorphological work, and a collaboratively led geodetic campaign. These eforts will be linked together with ongoing geologic work, with the aim of
formulating a robust framework for understanding the forces driving the tectonics of the Banda arc. The targeted region lies between the islands of
Sumba and Timor 118E-128E, spanning the transition from subduction of oceanic lithosphere to continental collision. This study of the Banda arc
holds promise for clarifying the relationships between surface uplift, crustal deformation and recycling, lithospheric structure, subduction, and mantle
convection, and ofers fundamental new constraints on the nature of stress transfer through complex plate boundaries.

Abstract
This project will investigate the palaeoenvironmental history of the Lake Towuti region, southwest Sulawesi, in particular the history of vegetation change.
Occupying a key location within the western tropical Paciic, the Lake Towuti region receives moisture from both the northerly and southerly monsoons, with lake level
luctuations strongly sensitive to ENSO. By utilizing the techniques associated with palaeoecology, namely the analysis of fossil pollen and charcoal in lake sediments,
we can explore how some of the big known global shifts in climate have manifested themselves in this landscape. The project outcomes include a signiicant regional
data set for deciphering how climate, ire, greenhouse gases, and other vegetation forcings have driven distributional and biodiversity changes through time, and will
play an important role in determining threats that projected climate change and human activities pose for these tropical forests.

Abstract
Eastern Indonesia is one of the least well understood geological domains of our planet, and yet the region provides a truly remarkable natural experiment for
unraveling the complex dynamics of convergent tectonics. The recent, subduction- related collision of the Australian continental lithosphere with the active Banda
arc efectively captures the initiation of convergent orogenesis and ofers a rare glimpse into a process that has shaped Earth’s evolution over geologic time. Along
strike the tectonic setting allows for imaging and assessing the spatio-temporal evolution of the collision, which allows for investigation of the transition from
subduction to arc-continental collision. This will also lead to help ill in fundamental

gaps in general understanding of collisional tectonics. There are many unanswered questions about the interrelationships between the history of convergence and
the present-day crustal, lithospheric and mantle structure, and the way this relates to topography; for example:
1. What are the initial location, timing, efects, and extent of the arc-continent collision, both along and across the Banda arc?
4. How do along-arc variations in lithospheric and crustal structure, including the extent of subducted continental lithosphere, modulate and inluence the
coupling and interactions between the deep mantle and surface deformation? To help answer these questions, a multidisciplinary research team at the University
of Southern California in collaboration with our partners at ITB in Indonesia has been assembled to constrain a sophisticated dynamical model of regional collision and
subduction by passive seismology, topography analysis, and geomorphological work. These eforts will be linked together with ongoing geologic work, with the
aim of formulating a robust framework for understanding the forces driving the tectonics of the Banda arc. The targeted region lies between the islands of Sumba

for clarifying the relationships between surface uplift, crustal deformation and recycling, lithospheric structure, subduction, and mantle convection, and ofers
fundamental new constraints on the nature of stress transfer through complex plate boundaries.
The observational eforts will include U-series dating of coral terraces, deploying 22 broadband seismic instruments in Indonesia and 8 in East Timor, collaborating
on GPS campaigns with researchers in Indonesia, East Timor, and Australia, and extensive and novel seismological imaging and interpretation eforts for the
Banda arc, along with geologic mapping to constrain longer few Myr controls on shortening and uplift conducted by our US and international collaborators.
The density of co-located GPS and broadband seismic locations will provide, for

irst time, extensive geophysical data and allow for detailed structural imaging and model of the collisional mechanics of Australia with the active Banda arc.
Our project will crucially complement existing and ongoing and planned seismic, geodetic, and geological work. We expect this approach to yield indings with broad
implications for the interactions between oceanic plate tectonics and continental dynamics on a global scale.

Abstract
The ield work research is in the Barisan Mountain Range in the Ombilin Basin, West Sumatra Province Island – Indonesia, in Tanahsirah and surrounding areas,Talawi,
Sawahlunto-District. The proposed research for 2014 is to completing the research have been done in 2009 and 2012 and to explore the Eocene Sangkarewang
Formation and the Miocene Sawahlunto and Sawahtambang Formations in the Ombilin Basin in West-Sumatra for vertebrate and plant fossils. The results of the
previous ieldwork have been published in several international seminars and international journals.
If the Tertiary fossil vertebrates from these rocks on Sumatra are found, they will provide evidence with which to examine the distribution of ancient Sunda Shelf
vertebrate communities and to test hypotheses of the early presence of faunal provincialism. Sumatra ofers a unique opportunity in that it was one of the few
western Indonesia islands that was emergent during the early to middle Tertiary - Java, Bali, Lombok, and others did not emerge from the ocean until much later.
It could be expected that, in both the Eocene and in the Miocene, the faunas of Sumatra will be dominated by Asian forms. If paleogeographic reconstructions of
Oceanic Southern Asia are correct, there should be no evidence of any Gondwanan faunal elements Australian in the Eocene rocks of Sumatra. However, by the
Miocene it is possible that some Australian faunal elements may have reached Sumatra.
The research is to explore Eocene and Miocene rocks on Sumatra for fossil plants and animals. The history of the Wallace Line is poorly understood partly because
there are almost no fossils from Oceanic Southern Asia older than the Pleistocene. While Tertiary faunas of Australia have been documented there have been few
opportunities to explore appropriately aged rocks in Indonesia. If we can ind more Tertiary fossil vertebrates from rocks on Sumatra, these will provide additional
evidence with which to examine the distribution of ancient Sunda Shelf vertebrate communities and to test hypotheses of the early presence of faunal provincialism.
Sumatra ofers a unique opportunity in that it was one of the few western Indonesia islands that was emergent during the early to middle Tertiary -- Java, Bali, Lombok,
and others did not emerge until much later.

elements Australian in the Eocene rocks of Sumatra. However, by the Miocene it is possible that some Australian faunal elements may have reached Sumatra. If
we can ind such indicators in the form of fossil vertebrates, we will have a much stronger basis from which to develop hypotheses of immigration and diversiication
within these communities and a much better chance of elucidating the history of the development of the famous Wallace Line. We believe that Sumatra holds much
promise perhaps the only promise for future exploration in rocks older than the Pleistocene in Oceanic Southern Asia.

Abstract
A year ago, we proposed several studies to better understand sea level, oceanography, and climate histories in Indonesia. This proposal involves work that
will complete the projects proposed last year. We propose to continue our eforts to explore the Holocene relative sea-level history on the Sunda Shelf, and to explore
Indonesian throughlow, regional neotectonics, Holocene palaeoenvironments, and relative sea-level history near the Strait of Makassar. On the Sunda Shelf, we
are compiling a mid-Holocene sea-level record with unprecedented vertical and temporal accuracy, using coral microatoll slabs from Belitung and Mapur islands.
We propose to continue our work on this project. Two papers are in preparation and will be submitted for publication in early 2015. However, other aspects of
the project cannot be completed until additional data are collected; with this document, we propose to collect the needed data to complete our research. This

proposal also addresses inter-related research opportunities on Doangdoangan- Besar island, a small, low-lying island in the easternmost Java Sea immediately
south of the Makassar Strait. We propose to address questions in the following areas: i records of past change in the strength of the Indonesian Throughlow ITF
using corals; ii neotectonics of the area; iii records of past environmental change using lagoon or lake sediments; and iv records of Holocene sea-level change
using coral microatolls, mangroves, and palaeoshoreline indicators. Using corals from the reefs surrounding Doangdoangan Besar and other nearby islands, we are
compiling high-resolution records of temperature and salinity variability, which are two deining features of the Indonesian Throughlow. We are also examining
palaeohazard events recorded in the sedimentology of the islands. We propose to continue extending and analysing these records, and to collect new material from
nearby islands. In addition, we propose one week of ieldwork on Selayar Island south of southwestern Sulawesi to increase the area of study for items i and ii.

Abstract
In the framework of the research program cooperation between Institut de Recherche pour le Développement IRD and Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi
Bencana Geologi PVMBG, the aim of multi-disciplinary scientiic project is to detect and characterize the deep magma source and the dynamics of magma transfer to
the surface using precise defor- mation measurements, especially tiltmeters and continuous Global Positioning System cGPS with modern data processes and
modelling.
After the 2010 eruption of Merapi, a new continuous GPS network has been installed by PVMBG and Kyoto University Iguchi et al., 2011, consisting in 3 stations located
on the volcano lanks plus a reference at Yogyakarta Observatory BPPTK, and is mainly dedicated to monitoring purposes.
In 2013, we have completed this network with 5 additional permanent stations, which are located on the summit area and volcano lanks at 3 to 6 km distance.

The inal network 8 stations + reference, all with 1-Hz sampling and real-time data streaming to the Observatory, are now potentially able to better detect and
measure the location and volume variations of possible magma sources, and follow magma transfer towards the surface. Precise daily solutions automatic algorithms
have been set up and data are accessible to every partner of the research program.
Now we plan to install real-time inversion of 3-D elastic modelling of deformation sources, using diferent approaches : 3D-MBEM Cayol Cornet, 1997 and displace-
ments tomography Augier, 2011. We will also install new tiltmeter stations at Merapi and North Maluku province volcanoes.
During my short stay in Indonesia July-September 2014, I will initiate the installation of this new network on the Merapi volcano, and set up the automatic
processing at Yogyakarta observatory with data streams from the irst operative stations. This will be achieved in collaboration with PVMBG teams, in particular Dr.
Subandriyo and Ir. Made Agung Nandaka from BPPTK, and Pr. Masato Iguchi from the Kyoto University.
Also, I will contribute to the installation of monitoring stations at Maluku volcanoes Ibu, Gamkonora, Gamalama, Dukono, Kie Besi.

Abstract
Our project makes part of the research program cooperation between Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement IRD and Pusat Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi
Bencana Geologi PVMBGCVGHM for multi-disciplinary investigations and improved monitoring of Gunung Merapi. Our scientiic contribution is focused on
tracking and quantifying magma degassing processes by using a combination of spectroscopic tools OP-FTIR spectrometer, MultiGAS sensors, SO2-camera and
DOAS sensors to remotely measure the chemical composition and the mass lux of volcanic gases and plumes emitted by the volcano. Volcanic gas survey has long
been carried out on Merapi thanks to regular access to the hot fumarolic ields of Woro and Gendol. However, since the November 2010 paroxysmal eruption
Surono et al., 2012 direct access to hot volcanic gases is no more possible and little information is available for the current post-paroxysmal magma degassing.
During our ieldwork in August-September 2014 we thus propose to perform remote sensing measurements i of the chemical composition H2O, CO2, SO2,
HCl, HF, CO and the mass lux of hot gases issuing from the summit crater by operating spectroscopic tools from the crater rim and from Pasar Bubar and ii of
the SO2-HCl-HF content and lux in the bulk volcanic plume at distance from the volcano using IR and UV absorption of the solar radiation. The results, obtained
at high frequency 1 Hz, will be correlated with geophysical signals earthquakes, deformations and, combined with petrologic data, to determine the quantity of
magma presently feeding the volcano. The scientiic responsible of the project PA has a long past experience with measuring volcanic gases on Merapi.
This work and resulting publications will be realized in close collaboration with our Indonesian counterparts in BPPTKG Drs Subandriyo, Sri Sumarti and Agus Budi
Santoso and with Dr. P. Bani IRD, Bandung for DOAS measurements. We shall also participate to the IAVCEI-COV8 Conference in Yogjakarta Sept. 9-13 where two of
us will be co-conveners Session 1.I.3.

Circulation and ecosystem study in the Indonesian seas under the inluence of the western Paciic
variability
The way the circulation and ecosystem of the Indonesian seas are inluenced by the western Paciic Ocean circulation and the dynamics of the forcing have
never been studied, due to lack of synchronous observations of the western equatorial Paciic Ocean and the eastern Indonesian seas. The main objectives of
the cooperative surveys are to measure the circulation and ecosystem variability in the eastern Indonesian seas, i.e. the Sulawesi Sea and the Maluku Sea. The study of
the interannual variations of the Indonesian seas is evidently very important to the economy and social development of Indonesia.
The survey will conduct CTD and ADCP measurements in the eastern Sulawesi Sea and Maluku Strait using Baruna Jaya 8. The temperature, salinity and dissolved
Oxygen proiles will be measured using CTD. Ship mounted ADCP measurements and water samples will be collected onboard of the ship during the survey. Three
deep ocean moorings consisting of ADCP, CTD, and current meters will be deployed in the Maluku Strait. The cruise will also retrieve one mooring system in the Maluku
Strait.

“South China Sea - Indonesian Seas TransportExchange SITE and Dynamics of Sunda andLombok Straits”
The method used in this cruise is to deploy and recovery the Trawl-resistant bottom mounted acoustics current doppler proiler TRBM ADCP Mooring and Sub Surface
Mooring Buoy CTD and ADCP.
Recover the four TRBMs Station B1, B2, B3, and B4 in Karimata Straits on April 2014. After load data and renew some equipment, the moorings will redeploy in
the same station again. Then in November 2014 will recover all the TRBMs and inish the observation in the Karimata Strait.
In August 2014, the Lombok Strait cruise will recover and redeploy the Sub Surface Mooring Buoy to load the current data of the Lombok Strait.
Objectives
The program SITE outlines an efort to measure the magnitude and variability of the water mass transportexchange, temperature, salinity, and heat lux between the
Indonesian Seas and South China Sea SCS in the Karimata Strait by deploying a series of trawl-resistant bottom mounted acoustics current Doppler proiler TRBM
ADCP moorings.
The low through the Karimata Strait is hypothesized to play a major role in controlling the dynamics of the SCS and Indonesian Seas, and in afecting the
primary Indonesian throughiow ITF and its impacts on seasonal ish migration. The ield work of the Phase I II of SITE program has been implemented from
November 2007 to October 2011. Data obtained in Karimata and Sunda Straits revealed that a signiicant water mass transport, 3.6 Sverdrup Sv, lowed from
the South China Sea to the Java Sea in boreal winter and about 1.8 Sverdrup from the Java Sea to the South China Sea in boreal summer. This indicates that the
Karimata Strait transport can contribute a seasonal variability of more than 5 Sv in

the total Indonesian Throughiow ITF. This result indicates that the Karimata Strait throughiow can greatly impacts the circulation of both the South China Sea and
the Indonesian Seas.
In Lombok Strait Cruise, the cruise objectives is understanding dynamics generation, propagation and dissipation mechanism of internal waves, determine
impacts of Indonesian Throughiow on internal waves and determine impacts of internal waves on biogeochemical luxes.

Abstract
At present the prevailing model for early hominin evolution and dispersal assumes that the genus Homo originated in Africa at least 2.33 Ma ago and that Homo erectus
was the irst to disperse into Eurasia about 1.7-1.9 Ma ago; and that the migrants were large-brained and essentially modern in stature and body proportions.
However, recent discoveries, especially at Dmanisi in Georgia and Liang Bua on the Indonesian island of Flores, indicate how little is known about when hominins
irst occupied Asia or the species involved. These diferences also challenge all key assumptions in the ‘Out of Africa 1’ Model.
This Project will target the site Mata Menge in the Soa Basin of Flores, where there are well preserved faunal remains associated with evidence of Middle Pleistocene
hominin occupation; where distribution of early hominin activities across the basin provides insights into their adaptive behavior. Although there is a long history of
research in the basin, we engage in a level of inter-disciplinary investigation and scale of excavation not attempted previously on Flores, and seldom in Southeast
Asia.
Furthermore, given evidence on Flores for a Late Pleistocene, endemic species, Homo loresiensis, the discovery of hominin remains from the Soa Basin will have
major implications for the evolutionary history of hominins on the island. And, because of the unique circumstances of Flores as a refuge for faunal lineages long
extinct elsewhere, the outcome of our research may have paradigm-changing

implications for the biogeography of early hominins in Asia, and for ancient dispersal events of hominins out of Africa.
The project will also explore other Indonesian islands that may have played a crucial role in the dispersal of hominins from Asia into island SE Asia and beyond, into
Australia. We have focused in particular on the large island of Sulawesi, which has been disconnected from the Asian mainland since at least the Eocene, and where
initial results suggest an early hominin occupation.
In addition, our research aims at unraveling the faunal evolution of Flores and other islands, with particular focus on the elephants and their relatives. Excavations at
Mata Menge have yielded an unprecedented collection of fossils of Stegodon and other insular animals that can shed light on the evolutionary processes at work on
an island. The rich fossil record on Flores covers a period from more than 1 million years to recent. This allows to investigate in detail a phenomenon called “the Island
Rule”, which predicts that large mammals such as elephants will evolve smaller body sizes and small mammals such as rodents becoming larger. This topic is
hotly debated in the recent literature, not in the least because it has been argued that Homo loresiensis itself represents an insular dwarf species. The well-dated
faunal sequence on Flores ofers an unique opportunities to test such models.

B. Abstract C. Background:
Child undernutrition remains high in Indonesia, despite gradual improvements during the last decade. Undernutrition in early childhood can impair growth and
cognitive development with lifelong consequences for health, economic and physical well-being. The use of mobile phone technology ofers unique opportunities
in the efort to tackle persistently high levels of child undernutrition and improve nutrition service delivery at community-level. World Vision IndonesiaCanada and
the Institute of Development Studies IDS propose to pilot and rigorously evaluate the use of a mobile phone application for child growth monitoring and nutrition
counselling in community-based Posyandus in rural and urban Indonesia.
Objectives:
The primary objectives of this pilot and evaluation study are to assess the impact of the mobile phone application on data accuracy and timeliness of growth
monitoring; quality of nutrition counselling and stakeholders’ responsiveness to the mobile-phone based data.

2014
Methods:
A total of 14 study sites have been purposefully selected in three macro areas of Indonesia, two urban and one rural, comprising, respectively, 2, 2 and 10
Posyandus. We plan to introduce the mobile phone application in parallel to the existing paper-based growth monitoring and counselling activities in each of
the 14 Posyandus. A mixed-methods approach is proposed for this evaluation study, based on a Theory of Change ToC and employing both qualitative and
quantitative methods. Diferent evaluation methodologies will be used including a counterfactual-based Mill’s Method of Diference design, mechanism-based Realist
Evaluation and Process Tracing and stakeholder interviews. Data sources for this study comprise routine data resulting from the growth monitoring, focus group
discussions, small-scale surveys, in-depth interviews, stakeholder interviews and participant observations. This study will not collect any human biological samples
or test any medical products or devices.
All data sets from the growth monitoring and the nutrition counselling activities will be fully anonymous and can thus not be linked back to the individual child. All data
will be stored on a secure server and access to the data will be password protected and will only be given to authorized researchers for the purposes of description
and analysis. Dr Inka Barnett plans to visit Indonesia several times for maximal 10- 14 days each visit during this period. Together with Dr Sigit Sulistyo from World
Vision Indonesia she will facilitate the training of the Indonesian research assistants, conduct brief visits to the study Posyandus, support the stakeholder interviews
and assist with the data analysis.
