B. From the calculation, it can be said that tag-switching is the type of code switching which rarely done by the English teacher in teaching the eleventh grade
students of SMK N 2 Depok Sleman.
B. The Functions of Code Switching
In this section the researcher discusses the second research question,
namely what are the functions of code switching used by the English teacher of
SMK N 2 Depok Sleman ? There are two findings discuseed: the description of the
functions of code switching in each classroom and the functions of teacher’s code switching in the classrooms. The first part discusses the percentage of the
functions of code switching. Meanwhile, the second part discusses the code switching cases and their functions in English classrooms.
1. The Description of The Functions of Code Switching in Each Classroom
According to Mattson Burenhult 1999, there are three functions of code switching in English classrooms. They are topic switch, repetitive functions,
and affective functions. Based on the researcher’s observation to the eleventh grade students of SMK N 2 Depok Sleman, including XI TKJ A, XI TGB, XI
TAV, and XI TKJ B, there are three functions of code switching in teaching English. The discussion on the functions of code switching in each classroom is
presented as follows. The first classroom observed by the researcher was XI TKJ Teknik
Komputer Jaringan A class. From the resea
rcher’s observation there are 29 code
48
switching cases done by the English teacher. From the calculation, 1 case aimed to topic switch functions, 19 cases aimed to repetitive function, while 9 cases
aimed to affective function. The percentage of each function is presented in the table below.

Gambar Bangunan class. From the rese archer’s observation there are 42 code
switching cases done by the English teacher. From the calculation, 4 cases aimed to topic switch functions, 29 cases aimed to repetitive function, while 9 cases
aimed to affective function. The percentage of each function is presented as follows.

The third classroom observed by the researcher was XI TAV Teknik Audio Video.
From the resea rcher’s observation there are 38 code switching cases

done by the English teacher. From the calculation, 2 cases aimed to topic switch functions, 27 cases aimed to repetitive function, while 9 cases aimed to repetitive
function. The percentage of each function is presented in the table below.

The last classroom observed by the researcher was XI TKJ Teknik Komputer Jaringan
B class. From the resea rcher’s observation there are 27 code
switching cases done by the English teacher. From the calculation, there is no case aimed to topic switch function, 21cases aimed to repetitive function, while 6 cases
aimed to affective function. The percentage of each function is presented in the table below.
