Significance of the Study

2 Drafting After planning, the students start to write their first draft of the composition. The goal of the first draft is to get the ideas on paper. The students are taught to focus on their expression of ideas and present them in a coherence and cohesive sequence. In addition, they are also told not to mind spelling and mehcanics at this step. 3 Revision When the students have finished their draft, every group member reads the writing of other group member and gives feedback on the clarity and organization of the ideas in the draft. The feedback given by students should be meaningful in terms of what they liked and what they want to know more about. It is about how they respond to and understand what is written. The students then could use the feedback to revise the writing and make it more easily understood. 4 Editing After they have revised their content of writing, each group member gives the composition to other group members for editing. During the editing, they focus on the mechanics and spelling. Students were given an editing checklist to help them focus on specific skills as they edited another student’s work. The feedback given by the other member could be considered to correct errors and improve the quality composition of hisher writing. The teacher also should read and check the students’ work before the final draft. 5 Final Draft The students share their final draft after they have edited and completed the previous step with other groups or the whole class. There should be less or none errors in the final draft as they have corrected during editing.

2. Teaching Writing

a. The Role of the Teacher

Teachers have significant roles in the process of teaching and learning. It is also needed in the process of writing. According to Harmer 2007: 330, there are three roles of English teachers in teaching writing. 1 Motivator As a motivator, an English teacher has to be able to motivate the students in writing tasks by creating the right situation for generating the ideas, persuading them of the usefulness of the activity, and encouraging them to make a s much as effort as possible for maximum benefit. 2 Resource The teacher needs to be ready to provide information and language where necessary to the students. He or she must be available and well prepared to look as the students’ progresses, offer advice and suggestions in a constructive and tactful way.
