A. Description of the Course

English for Mechanical Engineering Students of Sanata Dharma University is an English program that aims to teach the students of Mechanical Engineering study program some topics that are closely related to their field of machinery. The goal of this program is to improve their English competence so they will be helped in reading references in English during their study. Furthermore, the students will be better prepared in facing the working world. This English program provides several activities that will help the students to improve their English competence. These activities are set in accordance to the needs of the students with the hope of helping the students to apply them during their study and when they work later. The materials for this program consist of eight chapters. UNIT TOPICS 1 How to Use A Machine 2 How A Machine Works 3 The Four-Stroke Cycle 4 Rubber Plug Method of Tubeless Tire Repair 5 Chart of A Compression Process 6 Phoning A Garage 7 Hybrid Car 8 Applying for A Job Each unit consists of seven sections. They are:

1. Let’s Review

In this section, students recalled their memory on what they had learned last meeting. Teacher helped them by giving questions related to the previous material. As an exception, in unit 1 students reviewed Greeting and Introduction.

2. Browse Your Idea

3. New Stuffs

In this section students are introduced to the new vocabulary and patterns. This is done so that the students can understand the material easier.

4. Sharpen Your Skill

This section contains the exercises that should be done by the students. They are exposed to reading and listening material to help them in understanding the topic.

5. Language Focus

In this section, the grammar used is discussed. Students are also to analyze the grammatical point of the reading or listening passage.

6. Act Up

In this section, students are given the chance to perform themselves. They are to present their writing or speaking.

7. Let’s Conclude

In the last section students are to retell what they have learned. Teacher helps them by giving questions related to the material that they have studied this meeting.

At the end of the course the students are able to communicate in English orally and in written.
