CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

The last chapter in this research contains the conclusions and suggestions. The conclusions are to summarize the major findings which are discussed in the previous chapter and the suggestions are to enhance the implementation of independent learning and develop the students’ learning process.

A. Conclusions

Based on the data gathered from survey study and library study in the previous chapter, the researcher concluded that Kumon English Course used independent learning based on the experience from Toru Kumon. Toru Kumon did not apply the others theories about independent learning. He has his own belief that every child is capable of reaching his or her full potential. His mission is to help children acquire basic academic skills and become independent learners. Toru Kumon’s belief like what Rousseau described about autonomy is a precondition for effective learning. When learners succeed in developing autonomy, they do not only become better language learners but they also develop into more responsible and critical members of the communities in which they live as cited in Benson, 2001, p. 1. By using several steps in the teaching-learning process and asking the students to solve the problems with both speed and accuracy independently, the aim of Kumon English Course to make the students become independent learners was accomplished. 47 Most of the students had a positive perception on the implementation of independent learning in Kumon English Course to develop students’ English skill. For students, independent learning in Kumon English Course was beneficial: a. To improve their English b. To develop their responsibility while doing the worksheet c. To help them to be more understand the English material d. To increase English score at school e. To have a study habit f. To make them be more confident while pronouncing some words g. To help them to be an autonomous The improvements based on the problems that the researcher found from the questionnaire and interview. The first suggestion was to the students’ confidence and motivation in advance level. The instructors had to ensure students or at least showing the significant improvement in those questions in the worksheet. The instructors also had to assure that students had mastered their lesson in their last level of study. The instructors could not permit students to do the next level if they had not mastered yet the materials of the last level. Then, the instructors or parents helped students to manage their time management; it could help them to arrange their activities. The other improvement was to enhance the students’ self-esteem to have conversation. The instructor should use English in classroom to make conversation with the other instructors or students. The instructors could use the simple language to make students could grasp the meaning.
