It can be concluded that Yukiko Makioka’s family has the extrinsic motivation in finding a husband for Yukiko. It is because Yukiko is so passive
and shy. That makes Yukiko’s family has to find a husband for Yukiko. The extrinsic reward for Yukiko’s family when they succeed to find a husband for
Yukiko is the wedding of Yukiko itself.
4.2.2 Intrinsic Motivation
In finding a husband for Yukiko, Yukiko’s family has criteria for a man who will be Yukiko’s husband in the future. The criteria are that he comes from a
reputable family and money. It is shown by the author’s direct comment, “they should find a husband, and be sure that he came from a good family and money”
278. According to Franken, motivation theorists say the basic assumption that
for every behavior, there is a cause 3. The cause can answer why people do certain things and behave in a certain way. Yukiko’s family also has some causes
why Yukiko’s family makes criteria for a man who will be a husband for Yukiko. First, it is because Yukiko is thirty years old and not a career woman. She does
not work or do anything to earn money. The author gives his comment directly to show it, “Koi-san had her dolls and the income they brought and as a matter of
fact she seemed to be keeping company with a man, whereas poor Yukiko had nothing” 27.
Second, it is because the Makioka’s fortunes declined after Yukiko’s father died. The business was cut back and a shop in Semba had to be sold.

Makioka just has a big house in Osaka. Therefore, there is none can guarantee Yukiko’s life when she is old. The author gives his direct comment to show the
Makioka’s fortunes had declined: “The best day for the Makiokas had lasted perhaps into the mid-twenties.
Their prosperity lived now only in the mind of the Osakan who knew the old days well. Indeed even in the mid-twenties, extravagance and bad
management were having the effect on the family business. Soon after Sachiko’s father died, the business was cut back, and the shop of in
Semba, the heart of old Osaka-a shop that boasted a history from the middle of the last century and the days of the Shogunate-had to be sold”
8-9. The reasons above makes Yukiko’s family has a decision. They decide to
find a wealthy husband for Yukiko because a wealthy husband can guarantee Yukiko’s life and future. Even Yukiko also agree with her family’s decision. It is
shown by Yukiko’s thought: “She therefore had no particular objection to these revised standards,
although she did say that if the man had children she hoped they would be pretty girls. She thought she could really become fond of little
stepdaughters. She added that if the man were in the forties, the climax of his career would be left a widow, moreover, and, though she did not
demand a large estate, she hoped that there would at least be enough to give her security in her old age” 19.
According to Worchel and Shebilske, intrinsic motivation is “motivated behavior that derives from the enjoyment of performing the task rather than from
an expected reward” 408. Herbert L. Petri states the intrinsic reward involves the feeling of competence one obtains when one successfully complete a task 319.
The intrinsic motivation of Yukiko’s family is to find a wealthy husband for Yukiko. Tatsuo and Teinosuke Yukiko’s brothers-in-law as the heir and head of
Makioka do not expect to get money or other rewards when they can find a wealthy husband for Yukiko. They are just relieved because they are not worry

about Yukiko’s life and future anymore. We can see it through the author’s direct comment:
“Since Mimaki came from such an illustrious a family, since so eminent a person as Kunishima was willing to act as intermediary, and since
Teinosuke himself was enthusiastic. Tatsuo did not think it his place to raise objections. Teinosuke was much relieved. Now he had only Taeko to
worry about” 519. It can be concluded that Yukiko’s family has the intrinsic motivation in
finding a husband for Yukiko. They want to find a wealthy husband for Yukiko. It is because a wealthy husband guarantees Yukiko’s life and future. Delighted
becomes the intrinsic reward that Yukiko’s family gets when they succeed to find a wealthy husband for Yukiko.
4.2.3 Achievement Motivation
