59 From the analysis above, David’s decision gives a lot of influence to
Norah. She experiences a deep loss of the death of her daughter. She wants everybody to remember her daughter. Norah also envies other people whose their
life seems happy and away from lost. Losing her daughter causes Norah to be afraid of losing David and Paul. She tries to get out from her sorrow by holding a
party and taking a job.
c. On Paul
Since David tells Norah that their daughter dies after she is born, Paul is the only child. Paul gets all his parents care. Norah and David love him very
much. They do not want Paul to be hurt. Norah is always worried about Paul’s being hurt. It is seen from Norah’s ways to avoid Paul from anything that may
hurt him. She takes a risk to get the wasps down because Paul is allergic of bee para. 172-173. She is also worried when Paul’s arm is broken because he falls
down from the tree para. 196. Meanwhile, David tries to spare time in order to take Paul on collecting fossil together and fishing para. 327.
Instead of being happy because he gets his parents care, Paul feels lonely. Paul is lonely without any siblings at home. He misses a sister or brother at home.
He likes to play with Jason and wishes that Jason is his brother. Once in a conversation between Paul and David, Paul tells David excitedly his experience in
Jason’s grandfather’s farm. He helps Jason’s grandfather to milk a cow. He loves Jason’s grandfather. Then, David tells Paul that when David is child, he used to
able to milk cows. Paul says to David, “’That’s what Jason’s pawpaw did I like Jason. I wish he was my brother’” p. 182. It is also because his parents are busy

attention. Sometimes when his mother calls him to ask how his condition is and to promise that she will be home as soon as possible, he really wants to ask her to
come home para. 270. Paul feels the emptiness in the house. His parents have their own secret
and do their own activities. He knows his mother’s secret affair. Paul finds his mother’s flamingo shirt in front of a little cottage in the beach. Two hours later,
she is back with the flamingo shirt tucked in her. Paul guesses his father also has secret. It is about something he does in the darkroom or the office although Paul
doesn’t know exactly what the secret is. Before Paul knows Duke’s family, he considers his parents’ secret is a normal thing in a family. Nevertheless, hanging
out with Duke gives Paul another figure of a family life. It is Duke’s family life. Duke’s family is very modest. Duke’s father is not able to earn much money, but
he gives himself be home at six in the evening after the shift is over. Duke’s father also likes playing football with his kids para. 264.
Paul and Phoebe are separated since their newborn. Sometimes in his loneliness, he is wondering what his sister looks like although he never knows
her. They have not known each other, but they have ever been together for nine months in their mother’s womb. Norah states her opinion about it.
“How about Paul?” She nodded to him, sleeping, still and peaceful, on his blanket. “He misses her.”
“He can’t possibly remember,” David replied sharply. “Nine months,” Norah said. “Growing heart to heart. How could he not, at
some level?” p. 148

61 It is true that Paul often thinks about his sister. He thinks about what she
may be like. Would she be like him who likes to run and sing if she did not die para. 270. Once he says his wondering to David, it hurts David. “’My sister
doesn’t know how good she’s got it,’ he said” p. 383. It really hurts David which causes to David’s moving from their house.
David’s decision of taking Phoebe away causes Paul gets all his parents’ attention. Over his parents’ attention he feels lonely without any siblings because
his parents are away for work. It is also because he misses his sister and wonders what she is like.
