A. Conclusions

There are three parts that can be concluded from the analysis of the problem formulation. The first is how David is portrayed in the novel “The Memory Keeper’s Daughter ”. Based on the analysis, first, David is described as a kind person. He opens a free clinic on Tuesday nights for patients who are not able to pay so in order to give something back over gifts and talents of being a doctor and to realize his words to help the world. Second, David is protective. He protects Norah and Paul from grief, pain, and loss by sending Phoebe into an institution. Third, David is described as a calm person. When Norah is in her labour and when he finds Norah having affair with another man, David can control himself not to be in a rush and angry. Fourth, David is described as a secretive person. He never tells Norah that PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 71 his family is in grief, pain, and loss because June’s death as the result of Down syndrome. David also never tells Norah that he sends their daughter away to an institution because she has Down syndrome. He tells Norah that the daughter dies. The last, David is described as a griefful person. David has a hard life in his childhood because their parents are not rich. It is also because his sister has Down syndrome, and she dies because of heart defect as the result of having down syndrome. The motivation of David’s decision of taking his daughter with Down syndrome away from his family life is divided into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsically, David sends his daughter to an institution so that she can get the best medical treatment. Besides, David does not want Norah to experience the same grief like his mother. David also does not want Paul to experience the same pain and loss like him. Meanwhile, the extrinsic motivation is influenced by David’s professor. David’s decision of taking his daughter away from his family influences his family’s life. The influence on Phoebe is seen from a mother-daughter relationship between Caroline and Phoebe. Meanwhile, David creates new secrets in his family. His life is full of guilt, anger, regret, and redemption toward what he has decided. David’s decision gives a lot of influences on Norah. She experiences a deep loss of the death of her daughter. She wants everybody to remember her daughter. Norah also envies other people whose life seems happy and away from loss. Losing her daughter causes Norah to be afraid of losing David and Paul. Holding a party and taking a job are her ways to get out from sorrow. Since Paul PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 72 is the only child, he gets all his parents’ attention. Instead of being happy, he feels lonely without any siblings because his parents are away for work. He wonders what his sister is like. Caroline’s life changes because of David’s decision. She has to be a mother to Phoebe without any husband for six years. She starts a new real life and leaves her old life which she spends for waiting for recognition. The relation among members of David’s family is getting worse. David’s decision causes a distance between David and Norah. The distance is also between David and Paul. The distance causes them to do their own business. To summarize, David’s decision of taking Phoebe away from his family life is motivated by his griefful past life which includes his sister, June, who has died because of heart defect as the result of Down syndrome and his family who is in grief, pain and loss because the death of his sister. It is also motivated by his protective action to spare Norah and Paul from grief, pain, and loss like David’s and his family have ever experienced. The decision of taking Phoebe away from the family which is influenced by his secretive action gives influence on Phoebe, David’s family members, Caroline, and the relation among members of the family.
