David’s decision of taking Phoebe away causes Paul gets all his parents’ attention. Over his parents’ attention he feels lonely without any siblings because
his parents are away for work. It is also because he misses his sister and wonders what she is like.
3. On Caroline
David’s decision of taking Phoebe, his daughter with Down syndrome, to an institution not only changes David and his family’s lives but also Caroline’s
life. Caroline is the one who is commanded by David to bring the daughter into an institution. When she arrives in the institution, she experiences bad impression of
the institution. Caroline meets unfriendly nurses and uncomfortable place to live. She sees how the nurse cut a woman’s hair with a silver scissors. The woman’s
hair is spread over the shoulders and the bed sheet. …, one woman with a pair of scissors and the other sitting in a cotton slip

The air keeps still and silent. Later, when David asks Caroline to do whatever she will do with the daughter, Caroline decides to raise Phoebe and make a new life
by moving to another city para. 85 Having Phoebe with her changes Caroline’s life. The next twenty four
hours from now on, she must wake and sleep on Phoebe’s schedule or stay up late night to eat para. 76. In a sudden, she has to be a mother although she has not
been married. And for the next years, Caroline has to work very hard to pay her living with Phoebe.
Her life is different with Phoebe in her. Caroline starts her new life with her moving to another city, Pittsburgh, and seeking for a new job. She gets a job
as a nurse in a woman’s house named Doro. At beginning Doro is unfriendly, but as the years passed, Doro is not only kind to Caroline. They become a friend and
family. When Doro is going to have a long cruise with her lover in her age of sixty six, she gives her house to Caroline para. 284-285.
Caroline has to forget all the things she has ever dreamt. As a woman who has not been married, she has dreams. She dreams of travelling around China,
Burma, and Laos to join medical missionary. She is also dreaming of having a husband just like David Henry para. 32-34. She is lucky. Because of having
Phoebe, she can leave her young life which she spends for waiting for recognition,

Phoebe, David Henry’s daughter who has Down syndrome as she is born. Caroline meets Albert Simpson, who is called as Al, on her way coming
back from the institution when the car’s battery is dead. All helps taking Caroline home. Caroline tells a lie about the baby. Later, Al tells Caroline that he smells
something wrong about the baby, so he travels around to find Caroline. After Caroline becomes the mother of Phoebe without husband in her side for six years,
Al becomes a husband for Caroline and a father for Phoebe. It is concluded that Caroline’s life changes because of David’s decision.
She is willing to take care of Phoebe in order to save Phoebe from a terrible place. She has to be a mother to Phoebe without any husband for six years. She starts a
new real life and leaves her old life which she spends for waiting for recognition, adventure and love. Having Phoebe unites Caroline and Al in a marriage.
