3. Negative Politeness Payoffs

The idea of negative politeness payoffs is to give a chance for the speaker to be able to satisfy the hearer‟s negative face. The speaker can obtain the chance to take distance from the hearer and to pay respect to the hearer from doing the FTA Brown Levinson, 1987. The negative politeness payoffs are exemplified in dialogue 16. Dialogue 16 Setting : At the office. Situation : Dave wants to include Gretta in producing his music. Participants : Dave, Gretta, and the label officers. The director : “My assistant, Mim, the beautiful Mim. This is, uh… Mildread from marketing. Billy there is social media. The rest of the gang you‟ll meet, spend time with. So, uh, Gretta, you‟re going to play guitar on a track or two, I hope, right? ” Gretta : “Oh, yeah, sure. I mean, if Dave wants.” Dave : “Yeah, Gretta and I have been writing together for a couple years now, even before the film came along. So I would love for us to try a couple of her songs.” NP The director : “Did you… did you write on the film with him?” The conversation above is happened Dave and Gretta meet the officers in the label company in which Dave will do the music production. They will work together to produce the music which means that they have to keep the distance so PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 68 that they can work professionally. Since Dave is talking to the director of the label company in which Dave possesses lower power, he tends to use polite language. The underlined utterance above shows that Dave delivers his intention to include Gretta in the music production without imposing the director to agree with him. This means that Dave has satisfied the director‟s negative face in which freedom of act is given to the director. Therefore, through the underlined utterance, Dave can be able to obtain the payoff of negative politeness of being able to satisfy the director‟s negative face. In addition, Dave can also avoid imposing the director to agree with him in including Gretta in the music production. From the dialogues above, it can be concluded that the payoff of negative politeness is to put social distance between the speaker and the hearer. The language which is used in applying negative politeness tends to be more polite see the Appendix. Since, negative politeness strategy aims to take distance between the speaker and the hearer, an indirect question form is widely used by the four main characters in Begin Again. Furthermore, the speaker can also get a chance not to impose the hearer to do something.

The idea of off record payoffs is to give a chance for the speaker in avoiding the responsibility of doing the face threat. This payoff was only obtained by Gretta James, Dan Mulligan, and Dave Kohl since Steve did not PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 69 perform off record strategy based on the findings of the first research question. The off record payoffs are exemplified in dialogues 16 and 17. Dialogue 16 Setting : On the Top of A Building Situation : Gretta asks Dan to play the bass for the recording project. Participants : Dan and Gretta Gretta : “I‟m sorry, wait a minute. Um, do you play bass?” Dan : talking to the others “You were out of tune, you were flat.” Gretta : “Because I read on the internet that you used to play a bass. So, um, I think seeing as we‟ve got Violet doing some guitar on this, this should be a family affair.” OR Dan : “I am a producer „cause I do not play bass, baby.” Dan and Gretta are working on their outdoor album because the record label when Dan works has refused to make contract with Gretta. Since they do not have contract with the record label, they have to find a way to record the songs because they may have a financial problem. They decide to do the recording without using any studios which means that they do outside recording. The situation of the conversation above shows that Gretta performs off record strategy because she gives hints for Dan to play the bass. By putting hints in her utterance and performing off record strategy, Gretta can be able to avoid the potential threat of coercing the hearer in doing something. Moreover, she can avoid the responsibility of doing the Face Threatening Acts. Therefore, Gretta can build the image in which she does not give coercion to Dan to play the bass. Gretta can build the condition as if Dan is willing to play the bass for the music recording without being coerced by others. Another situation which can give the chance to obtain off record payoffs is where Dan and Gretta are arguing about Dan‟s problem. Gretta opens their PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
