he address form “babe” indicates the desire of the speaker that he wants to be closer with the hearer. By
applying the address form, Dan aimed to minimize the distant between Gretta and him since he aimed to make Gretta interested in his offer. Therefore, the speaker
expects th at the address form “babe” can make the speaker and the hearer obtain a
closer relationship.
2. Bald on Record
Bald on Record is the strategy in which maximum efficiency of communication is attempted to be achieved. Since this strategy attempts to
achieve maximum efficiency of communication, the utterances produced in this strategy will tend to be impolite. In other words, there is an absence of politeness
in this strategy and the utterances will be expressed directly to the hearer. The speaker will not pay attention to the hearer‟s face when heshe produces the
utterances through bald on record strategy. Thereby, the clear example of bald on record is the use of imperative since it is expressed clearly and directly to the
hearer. Besides, the condition of urgency also makes the speaker have to express the utterances by applying bald on record strategy.
There are two kinds of bald on record which are applied in different circumstances. Those circumstances are where the FTA is not minimized and
where the FTA is minimized by the implication. The circumstance where the FTA is not minimized is the condition of great urgency. In other words, the speaker
wants to express the utterance clearly and directly to the hearer without caring about the hearer‟s face. The clear example of this circumstance is the utterances in
46 a form of welcoming, farewell, and offering. However, the utterances in a form of
welcoming which were done by the four characters were not found in the movie. Based on the findings in table 4.1, the most frequent circumstance of bald on
record is where the FTA is not minimized. This circumstance becomes the most frequent circumstance of bald on record strategy because the clear example of
bald on record is imperative in which it is expressed directly and clearly to the hearer.
Bald on record strategy was performed by all four characters in Begin Again
movie. However, Dan Mulligan and Gretta James were the two characters who were dominating the application of bald on record. Meanwhile, the two other
characters performed this strategy less frequently. The example of the first circumstance where the utterances are expressed in great urgency can be seen in
the scene where Steve asks Gretta to check out the video about her boyfriend. At that scene, Gretta and Dan have just come to
Steve‟s house where Gretta lives for a while. Steve suddenly shows up and asks Gretta to check the video on the
internet about her boyfriend who has just won a music award. It seems that she does not believe that her boyfriend has just won the music award, but finally she
checks the video out. The conversation between Steve and Gretta can be seen in dialogue 4 and the utterance which is expressed through bald on record strategy is
labeled with BoR.

Gretta and her boyfriend, Dave, have just broken up because Dave cheats on Gretta. After they break up, Dave continues his job as a singer and songwriter
and goes on some tours to promote his album. It seems that Dave has become a successful singer and songwriter that he has many fans and he is very famous.
Meanwhile, Gretta meets Dan, a music producer who wants to make a contract with Gretta as a singer and songwriter. As Gretta starts to forget her bad
memories, she is very surprised knowing that Dave has won a music award. Gretta cannot believe that Dave be able to reach the point in which he gets the music
award. The dialogue above implies that there is an urgency to check the video about Gretta‟s boyfriend who has just won the music award as soon as possible.
The utterance, “Come on and check” is included as imperative because it was expressed clearly and directly to the hearer that heshe had to do something. By
expressing the utterance through bald on record strategy, the speaker wants to achieve the maximum efficiency of communication that the point of the
communication can be delivered clearly to the hearer. Since the utterance is expressed due to the urgent condition, Steve as the speaker in the dialogue does
not minimize the threat to the hearer. In other words, Steve produces the utterance to make Gretta want to follow his desire without caring with the Face Threatening

48 Since there is an absence of politeness in bald on record strategy, the
circumstance where the speaker does not minimize the face may be done because the speaker is more powerful than the hearer. The example that shows the speaker
who is more powerful than the hearer is illustrated in the scene where Dan is mad at his partner, named Saul, because they have different vision for their company.
The example can be seen in dialogue 5. The bald on record strategy is labeled with BoR.

Saul : “You want to do..don‟t do this here.”
Dan and Saul are cooperated in running the record label because they are best friends and are studying in the same university. At the beginning of the
process, they have the same vision for the record label that makes their label becomes one of the best labels in New York. As time goes by, their vision for

49 problem that happened in his family so that it makes him loses his focus on his
work. Since Saul does not on the same vision with Dan anymore, he starts to make distance with Dan. Saul follows his vision and starts to work on his vision
with the staffs without having discussion about the vision with Dan. At the day of the meeting, Dan comes and shows his disagreement toward the plans that each
band should have made audio commentary on their own music. In dialogue 5, Dan said,
“Come back here. Don‟t you walk away from me, man.
” to show that he needs Saul to give explanation why he run the plans without doing any discussion with Dan. Since Dan expresses his disappointment
toward Saul, Dan tends to be rude by producing the utterances without doing the face minimization. Dan is more powerful than Saul because when someone is mad
at something, he will express the feeling to the hearer without caring with the hearer‟s feeling. Therefore, the underlined utterance above is expressed because
the speaker possesses more power in which it makes the speaker obtains more power to satisfy his own desire.
The next circumstance is where the face threat is minimized to the hearer. The application of bald on record strategy in this circumstance can be seen in the
utterance which is aimed to give an offer to the hearer. The scene where Steve and Gretta meet for the first time after a long time can illustrate the application of bald
on record strategy in giving an offer to the hearer. This scene is a flashback where Dave and Gretta have not broken up yet. Dave is busy with his projects and tours
while Gretta is having fun by herself when finally she meets Steve after a long time. Steve then, invites Gretta to come to his house and they are having a good
