1. Positive Politeness
Positive politeness is applied with the aim of getting closer relationship with the hearer. Positive politeness strategy deals with the act of respecting the
hearer‟s positive face. Positive face is the desire of being admired, accepted, or liked. Besides, this strategy also aims to make the hearer comfortable with the
speaker when they are doing the interaction. Positive politeness is applied by the four main characters in Begin Again movie. Therefore, most of the languages that
are used in this strategy will be more intimate and will sound closer to the hearer. The language that is used can be in a form of in-group identity markers, which
states that the speaker and the hearer are cooperator. Besides, praise or compliment, hedging, question, offer, and promise are also used to satisfy the
hearer‟s positive face. Furthermore, the element of exaggeration will also be included in applying this strategy by the means of fulfilling the hearer‟s desire.
The application of positive politeness can be seen in a scene in Begin Again
movie where Gretta and Steve meet for the first time after a long time. As Dave is busy with his project on his album, Gretta spends her time in New York
42 walking around the city. Fortunately, Gretta founds Steve when he is singing on
the road. Gretta and Steve are very excited of having met each other. Since they have just met after a long time, then they are spending time together walking
around the city and sharing their stories. The positive politeness application is illustrated in dialogue 1. The positive politeness is labeled with PP.

: Gretta and Steve met each other after a long time. Participants : Gretta and Steve
Gretta : “Hello.”
Steve : “Look at you. Oh my God”
Gretta : Telling about Dave‟s project “He has the studio for three
months, and then we go on tour, so I think we‟re staying for six.” Steve
: “This is unbelievable. You‟re total rock star. PP Which studio is
he working with? ”
Gretta : “Electric Lady.”
Steve : “Oh, fuck off.”
Gretta : Laugh “I know.”
Gretta told Steve that she and her boyfriend came to New York because Dave is making a contract with one of the famous record labels in New York.
Steve is very surprised after knowing that his friend will become a famous songwriter and singer. The utterance, “This is unbelievable. You‟re total rock
star,” shows that Steve gives compliment to Gretta for the achievement. It is included as compliment because it implies that the speaker admires
the hearer‟s action. The compliment is given with
the aim to satisfy the hearer‟s positive face. Furthermore, this also means that the speaker wants to get closer to the hearer.
Another example of the application of positive politeness is the use of offer in the utterances. The use of offer indicates that the speaker wants to act as if
