Since they have just met after a long time, then they are spending time together walking around the city and sharing their stories. The positive politeness application is illustrated in dialogue 1. The positive politeness is labeled with PP. Dialogue 1 Setting : Road Situation : Gretta and Steve met each other after a long time. Participants : Gretta and Steve Gretta : “Hello.” Steve : “Look at you. Oh my God” Gretta : Telling about Dave‟s project “He has the studio for three months, and then we go on tour, so I think we‟re staying for six.” Steve : “This is unbelievable. You‟re total rock star. PP Which studio is he working with? ” Gretta : “Electric Lady.” Steve : “Oh, fuck off.” Gretta : Laugh “I know.” Gretta told Steve that she and her boyfriend came to New York because Dave is making a contract with one of the famous record labels in New York. Steve is very surprised after knowing that his friend will become a famous songwriter and singer. The utterance, “This is unbelievable. You‟re total rock star,” shows that Steve gives compliment to Gretta for the achievement. It is included as compliment because it implies that the speaker admires the hearer‟s action. The compliment is given with the aim to satisfy the hearer‟s positive face. Furthermore, this also means that the speaker wants to get closer to the hearer. Another example of the application of positive politeness is the use of offer in the utterances. The use of offer indicates that the speaker wants to act as if heshe is the cooperator for the hearer. The example of offers is shown the scene where Gretta offers Violet to go shopping with her. At this scene, Violet wants to get attention from that boy. However, she looks like having problem with the way she dressed up that she cannot get attention from the boy she liked. Therefore, Gretta offers Violet to go on shopping to get a better style of dressing up. The example of positive politeness application in the form of offer can be seen in the following dialogue. Dialogue 2 Setting : The Park Situation : Gretta offered Violet to go shopping with her that she could get better appearance Participants : Gretta and Violet Violet : “I thought this was sort of sexy, it‟s American Apparel.” Gretta : “No, it is sort of sexy. It‟s very, very easy, but it doesn‟t leave much the imagination, you know? ” Violet : “I guess.” Gretta : “You want to go shopping?” PP Violet : “I do. Yeah.” Gretta : “OK good. We‟re going shopping.” By looking at the underlined utterance above, Gretta attempted to make closer relationship with Violet. The utteranc e “You want to go shopping?” is included as an offer because it aimed to ask the hearer whether she wants to do the action or not. Furthermore, it shows that the speaker is willing to help the hearer obtain her wants. The utterance which is showed in the dialogue above implies that the speaker and the hearer are cooperator. The speaker meant to state that she is willing to do the same action as well as the hearer ‟s wants in order to obtain the hearer‟s wants. Therefore, the aim of positive politeness will be achieved that this strategy aimed to make the hearer feel comfortable and to make the relationship closer.
