Research Setting Research Subjects

37 the next action to be done. Therefore, through the data display, the writer would be able to draw conclusion related to the data.

c. Conclusion Drawing

The last step of the analysis is conclusion drawing. Miles and Huberman 1994 state that from the beginning of data collection, the writer has already had the initial conclusion in which the conclusion is still vague. After finishing the two previous steps, the writer was able to build a conclusion based on the data which have been simplified and fixed. Therefore, the final conclusion would be clearer and more accurate as it was constructed based on the data which had been processed.

F. Research Procedures

The procedures which were used to gather and analyze the data were explained as follows: 1. Analyzing the Characters’ Utterances The first step was analyzing the script of Begin Again movie. The writer analyzed the movie script to select the utterances which contained politeness strategies. Afterward, the writer analyzed all utterances of the four main characters to find out the answer of the research questions.

2. Categorizing the Characters’ Utterances

The second step was categor izing the characters‟ utterances into the types of politeness strategies. The writer employed the theory from Brown and Levinson 1987 about politeness strategies. This procedure was done to find out 38 what type of politeness strategies which was used by the characters. By categorizing the utterances, the data could be easier to be analyzed.

3. Identifying the Factors of Politeness Strategies

The next step was analyzing the factors of the politeness strategies. This procedure was done to find out why the characters applied the politeness strategies into their utterances. The researcher employed the theory from Brown and Levinson 1987 about the factors influencing the choice of the strategies. There are two factors that influence the characters in choosing the strategies, namely payoffs and sociological variables. Each strategy has its own payoffs which influence the characters to choose certain strategy. The sociological variables consist of three factors, namely social distance, relative power, and rank of imposition. Therefore, the writer provided explanation for the choice of strategy based on the theory proposed by Brown and Levinson 1987.

4. Writing Up the Report

The last procedure was writing up the report. The researcher started to write a report after completing all of the procedures. The researcher provided explanation in each strategy and some examples to strengthen the explanation. In order to support the findings, the researcher would associate the findings to the theory by Brown and Levinson 1987 about politeness strategies and the factors influence the choice of the strategy.
