1. 5. 4. DEPARTMENT OF METALLURGY AND MATERIALS ENGINEERING

GENERAL Department of Metallurgy was originally es - tablished as a study program under Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia in 1965. Due to the lack of qualiied lecturers and infra - structure, the irst academic activity was only attended by 25 students. For almost 6 years since 1969, the department had stopped ac - cepting new students and focusing the activity to the existing students. In 1975, the depart - ment began to accept students again, and in the same year produced the irst 7 graduates. Ever since, the department kept continuing and developing its academic activities. As the science and technology progresses, especially for the engineering materials-based indust ries, also considering t he availabilit y of resources within the department, Department of Metallurgy consolidated its resources and st udied t he need t o add “ mat erials” t o t he name. Following the idea, on November 5th 2002, Rector of Universitas Indonesia then de - creed Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering as one of the departments within t he Facult y of Engineering. The curriculum in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering is structured to address problems associat ed wit h t he met allurgy and design of materials and materials processing to meet the speciic needs for a variety of industries. Emphasis is on the basic sciences and principles of engineering with applications of these prin - ciples to metallurgy and materials behaviors. The st udent s must obt ain a broad f oundat ion in chemistry, physics, and mathematics, which is applied in engineering courses. Within met - al l ur gy and mat er i al s engi neer i ng cour ses, students obtain a foundation in the major areas of met allurgy and mat erials science and to the major classes of engineering materials, which is applied in courses in materials prop - erties and selection, computational methods and in capstone design course. Students gain in-depth experience in another engineering discipline through coordinated technical elec - t ive sequences. In 2011, the department has totally gradu - ated almost 2000 graduates with a degree in bachelor of engineering, 81 graduates with a degree in master of engineering, and 11 gradu - at es wit h a doct oral degree. At t he beginning of irst semester of 20112012, the department has actively 426 undergraduate students, 71 master students, and 24 doctoral students. Considering the high demand to produce quali - ied graduates and following current trends toward the global competition, Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering is com - P R O F IL E O F F T U I A N D D E P A R T M E N T S 18 mitted to continuously improve its academic activities including teaching and learning pro - cess as well as research activities. As a part of nat ional educat ion syst em, which has t he objective to develop the intellectual life of the nation through human resources development by conduct ing t hree main act ivit ies known as tridharma “three duties”, the department is al so commit t ed t o carry out higher l evel educations, to conduct scientiic research, and to provide community services. During its development stage, the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering has achieved several milest ones, such as: Grade A Accreditation for Under - • graduate Program from National Ac - creditation Board, Ministry of National Education Year 2013 and 2018. Establishment of master 1995 and • doctoral 2008 programs.
