9. Sarcasm

According to Haiman 1998, “sarcasm refers to a satirical or ironic utterance that is intended to convey a negative attitude, insult, or offend” as cited in Jay, 2003, p. 331. There is one example of the line which is sarcastic. The example is I pray to God you don‟t see the silent hell in I wish you well No Good in Goodbye, line 22. The word hell is intended to give his woman negative things. The meaning that is conveyed by the words is that the man wants the woman to be hurt or got something bad since she left him.

10. Personification

Lakoff and Johnson 2003, p. 33 state that personification is “where the physical object is further specified as being a person. ” The things which are nonhuman can be seen as human by giving them motivations, characteristics, and activities of human Lakoff Johnson, 2003, p. 33. There are nine examples of the lines consisting personification. The first example of the line consisting personification is they took away the prophet‟s dream Superheroes, line 3. “They” refers to all the meaner which means that it is an inanimate thing, but the songwriters make it can take away the prophet‟s dream. The second example is the line a heart of steel starts to grow Superheroes, line 6. Starting to grow is an ability that is owned by living things, 43 but in the lyrics it is written that a heart of steel which is an inanimate thing that do that. That is the evidence that the line express a personification meaning. The third example of the line expressing personification is my heart, my heart is heavy, and it sinks like a stone It‟s not Right for You, line 2. “It” refers to the man‟s heart, so that it is personification because it is given an animate characteristic which can sink. Since in the real life, it is impossible to see a heart sinking. Another line consisting personification is my hands, my hands are scarred by the things I shouldn‟t have done It‟s not Right for You, line 14. The things are inanimate things, but they can hurt him. It means that he is annoyed and regrets since he does not do things that he should have done. He might skip chances that came to him so that he feels hurt. The next example is the line so it‟s before too late and it‟s killing you yeah It‟s not Right for You, line 25. Based on the context, “it” refers to a condition where they do not do anything and they do not improve themselves. It is given a human‟s characteristic which can kill people. The next personification expression is in the line it‟s not the end, cause the energy never dies The Energy Never Dies, line 16. The energy is an animate thins which is given a human characteristic which can die. The line means that the couple‟s love never ends whatever and whenever the condition is. The last two examples of the lines consisting personification are gonna tear this world apart and the world still sings along Without those Songs, lines 10 and 13. The songs are going to tear this world apart and it is the evidence of using personification. Songs are inanimate things, but then they are given a human characteristic that 44 can tear something. The world is indeed an animate thing, but it is given a human characteristic that can sing. The world means all humans who live in the world.

B. Predominant Types of Figurative Language in The Script’s Album No

Sound without Silence This section focuses on the second research problem which is to find out the types of figurative language which predominate in t he lyrics of The Script‟s album No Sound without Silence. Based on the analysis, the researcher finds that there are ten types of figurative language found in the lyrics, namely metaphor, simile, hyperbole, meiosis, idiomatic expressions, rhetorical questions, metonymy, irony, sarcasm and personification.
