Simile Types of Figurative Language in the Lyrics
33 the woman either in the lifetime or afterlife because they have the love that never
ends. Another example is turn the city into Dublin Paint the Town Green, line 24. The songwriters want the immigrants to make the place they are living in
feels like they are in the Dublin which represents Ireland as their homeland. Then, they will feel that they live in their real home, even though it is not. The next
example is but no I‟ll never go and change them Hail Rain or Sunshine, line 24.
The man does not need to go and change his friends for the world because he cannot do that. The ones who can change them are themselves.
The hyperbolic expressions are to show positive emotion. The examples are I think I want you more than want, and no I need you more than need, and I
want to hold you more than hold Never Seen Anything Quite Like You, lines 1- 3. There is nothing more than want, nothing more than need, and nothing more
than hold. The use of words want, need, and hold shows that the man strongly wishes the woman to be with her. Want, need, and hold are a willingness which
comes from heart. It creates a sense of happiness for the woman since she is wanted, needed, and held.
The next examples are oh what a beautiful sight and a hundred soldier in the sky Army of Angels, lines 22 and 23. A beautiful sight represents The
Script‟s amazement of their fans‟ great supports. Then, a hundred soldiers represent many fans that are loyal and fearless who like its songs and the members
as persons. Therefore, the lines mean that The Script is very happy because they can see the loyalty and support of its fans in every condition. Another example is I
stay here forever till I turn to dust The Energy Never Dies, line 18. The line PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
34 means that he will always be with her until he dies. The man shows his loyalty to
his woman by giving her times and anything else that he can give. Another example is
you‟re in the darkness all alone Flares, line 7. In this case, darkness represents the woman‟s condition which is in hard times of life.
Furthermore, she is completely alone without any companions beside her. She feels sad since actually she needs companions to support her in her hard times.
Another example is it kills you not to be there Paint the Town Green, line 12. It is hard for Ireland immigrants not to be in Ireland in Paddy‟s day since it is a great
celebration to commemorate Saint Patrick as the Patron Saint of Ireland. It is when all Irish people gather with all their friends and family. Based on the
co ntext, “kill” means to make Ireland immigrants when the celebration of Paddy‟s
day feel sad. Thus, the line means that Ireland immigrants are sad since they are not in Ireland to celebrate Paddy‟s day with all family and friends.
Last, there are hyperbolic expressions intended to show negative emotion. The first example is
now I‟m the low in lonely No Good in Goodbye, line 13. Lonely itself is something terrible. Furthermore, “the low” makes the meaning
clear that the man is in deep loneliness and sadness since he is left by his woman. The complete hyperbolic expressions analysis can be seen in Appendix 3.
