Hyperbole Types of Figurative Language in the Lyrics

35 There are five examples of meiosis expressions found in the album. The first example is he‟ll be nothing when he‟s old Superheroes, line 8. It is meiosis because in the future, old people will not be nothing because they pass a lot of processes with all ups and downs of life and at least they do something in the past whatever it is, whether it is for their family or even for anybody else and it is counted as something in the future. It means that they are going to be something when they are old. The next example is if we stay here too long then we‟ll, we‟ll never grow old It‟s not Right for You, line 24. It is impossible to not grow old because growing old is all humans‟ destiny. Then, it is like to understate that they will not grow or even improve themselves. The third example is I cross my heart and I hope to die The Energy Never Dies, line 1. The man should be thankful since he is blessed and lives, but he wants to die. He underestimates himself because the lyrics tell that he and his woman will no longer be together so that he chooses to die if that happens. The fourth example of the line using meiosis is I‟ll tell you life‟s just a blink so don‟t think twice The Energy Never Dies, line 6. Life is not just a blink, but it is long enough, even though not for all people. Moreover, the meaning of a blink and a flash of light is not too different, they are all quick. However, they have positive meaning which is in this life, human has to take every chance that comes and does not hesitate to take it because it may change their lives. The last line which deemphasizes meaning is you may see this place and find no worth Hail Rain or Sunshine, line 12. Place with no worth is too understated because every place has its own beauty and uniqueness and it is totally not with no worth. 36

5. Idiomatic Expressions

Jay 2003, p. 340 cites from Fromkin and Rodman 1998 writes that “idioms are conventionalized expressions that have figurative meanings that cannot be derived from the literal meaning of the phrase.” The words or phrases are not translated word by word based on the dictionary because they carry different meanings from the words in the dictionary. There are nine examples of the lines consisting idiomatic expressions. The phrase soldier on in the line w here‟s the soul in soldier on? No Good in Goodbye, line 12 is an idiomatic expression. It means to continue doing something, although it is difficult. In this case, soldier on means the man is to continue fighting for his love and for the woman, although the woman does not want to do the same. The second example of idiomatic expression is found in the line „cause I‟m walking on a tightrope Man on a Wire, line 13. Walking on a tightrope means that he is in the bad situation as in the complicated relationship and he needs to be extremely careful with what his decisions that he is going to take and things he wants to do. It means that he is in a difficult situation when he wants to struggle for his love even though he knows that his woman probably does not want to do the same Another idiomatic expression is the line my heart is in my throat Man on a Wire, line 14. A heart is in someone‟s throat means that he is extremely nervous and afraid. In this case, he is nervous and afraid of his relationship with his woman, whether or not it can be continued. The fourth example of the line consisting idiomatic expressions is for a profit on the street Superheroes, line 4. “On the street” means widely known. Working every day and night does not literally mean working at day and night. The line means that they work all the times without considering time. The sixth example of the line consisting idiomatic expressions is I stay here forever till I turn to dust The Energy Never Dies, line 18. Turn to dust does not mean that he truly becomes dust, but it means that he is not worthy anymore or even he dies. Thus, the line means that the man is loyal because he is always there for the woman until he is not able to be loyal anymore or he dies. Another idiom meaning is found in the line we‟re gonna paint the town green Paint the Town Green, line 9. There is an idiomatic expression which is to paint the town red that has the same meaning as paint the town green. The songwriters use green as the word because green is the symbol of Ireland and it is the symbol of freedom and luck. The meaning of the line is to go out celebrate all the things that they have with full of excitement and happiness. The next idiomatic expression is the phrase break the banks in the line I have to break the banks Paint the Town Green, line 14. It means that he uses all of one‟s funds. The last example of idiomatic expression is we catch a lift Hail Rain or Sunshine, line 5. It means that they are got driven by someone else going somewhere. 6. Rhetorical Questions

According to Jay 2003, p. 343 , “rhetorical questions are not meant to be answered.” They function as statements. Furthermore, they are used to clarify and show negative emotion Robert Kreuz, 1994, p. 161. There are 39 rhetorical questions in the lyrics. Among those rhetorical questions, 8 rhetorical questions are used to show the negative emotion and 31 rhetorical questions are intended to clarify. The examples of rhetorical questions showing the negative emotion are as follows. The first example is where‟s the good in goodbye? No Good in Goodbye, line 9. The songwriters do not need the answers from the listeners. They want to show the sadness that there is no good in goodbye because in a parting there is only sadness and it is not good at all. The second example is where‟s the nice in nice try? No Good in Goodbye, line 10. There is no nice in nice try since people say nice try to someone else when doing something to mean that it is not successfully correct or as good as their expectation. The next two examples of the rhetorical questions are did you break but never mend? and did it hurt so much you thought it was the end? Flares, lines 16 and 17. The two lines are meant to express the negative emotion. A feeling of not worthy and a feeling of giving up are kinds of negative emotions that are reflected by those two lines. Another example is who would‟ve thought that I‟d be here by myself? Man on a Wire, line 1. The songwriters want to state that the man is now alone without his woman and nobody thinks it will happen. He is sad because he is left PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
