40 love?
It‟s not Right for You, lines 3 and 4. The woman does not need the man to answer the question, but she wants the man to consider again his activities that
he is doing since it is not the life the man has been dreaming of because he spends half the day away from the things he loves and does things he does not love. The
complete rhetorical expressions analysis can be seen in Appendix 3.
7. Metonymy
Lakoff and Johnson 1980 state that “metonymy is the tactic of using a
familiar or easily perceived aspect of an object or situation to stand for the things as a whole” as cited in Jay, 2003, p. 323.
There are four examples of metonymy found which are included in one song entitled Paint the Town Green. The examples are and that life you had in
Dublin , we‟re so close to Paddy‟s Day, like it was the Luas line, and chase the
Hudson to the Liffey lines 3, 11, 21, 22 . The phrases Dublin, Paddy‟s Day, Luas
line, and the Hudson represent Ireland. It is easy to perceive since Dublin is the capital city of Ireland. Furthermore, Paddy‟s Day or Saint Patrick‟s Day is the day
to commemorate Saint Patrick, the Patron Saint of Ireland. There, all Irish people celebrate Paddy‟s Day by having a Mass and having a carnival or a parade in the
streets of Ireland while wearing green costumes. Moreover, Luas line is a famous line which exists in Dublin. Then, Luas line represents Ireland as the homeland of
the immigrants. Thus, the songwriters want the immigrants to travel places around them as comfortable as they travel in Ireland and do what they usually do in their
homeland. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
41 The Hudson and Liffey are rivers. The Hudson River is in Manhattan and
The River Liffey is in Dublin. Before obtaining the validation from the experts, the researcher analyzed that the rivers represented Ireland. Through the line, the
songwriters wanted to support Ireland immigrants to survive wherever they live. However, the experts suggested that actually the rivers represent the power of
empire. The songwriters want to give the spirit to the immigrants that no matter where they are, the power of their own country which is Ireland will always be
felt through the hearts of a nation.
8. Irony
Jay 2003, p. 330 says that irony is “interpreted as the use of figurative
language to produce the opposite meaning of the literal meaning or it is another form of figurative language, where one thing is stated but something else is
intended.” According to Dews 1996, “irony requires the listener to substitute a new meaning for the literal meaning” as cited in Jay, 2003, p. 331.
There is one example of the line consisting irony. The example is I know I‟ll miss this mistake No Good in Goodbye, line 3. The line has the opposite
meaning with the words written. The man does not miss the mistakes since they make him and his woman broken up. However, it means that the man misses the
one who is hurt because of his mistakes. Thus, it means that he misses his woman. In this case, the experts validated the analysis by giving justification that actually
the meaning of the line is that nobody wants to make mistakes since it can hurt PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
42 himself or even others. The man does not miss the mistake that makes his
relationship with his woman end.
9. Sarcasm
According to Haiman 1998, “sarcasm refers to a satirical or ironic
utterance that is intended to convey a negative attitude, insult, or offend” as cited in Jay, 2003, p. 331. There is one example of the line which is sarcastic. The
example is I pray to God you don‟t see the silent hell in I wish you well No Good
in Goodbye, line 22. The word hell is intended to give his woman negative things. The meaning that is conveyed by the words is that the man wants the
woman to be hurt or got something bad since she left him.
10. Personification
Lakoff and Johnson 2003, p. 33 state that personification is “where the
physical object is further specified as being a person. ” The things which are
nonhuman can be seen as human by giving them motivations, characteristics, and activities of human Lakoff Johnson, 2003, p. 33.
There are nine examples of the lines consisting personification. The first example of the line consisting personification is
they took away the prophet‟s dream Superheroes, line 3.
“They” refers to all the meaner which means that it is an inanimate thing, but the songwriters make it can take away the prophet‟s
dream. The second example is the line a heart of steel starts to grow Superheroes, line 6. Starting to grow is an ability that is owned by living things,
