2. Formulating Goal, Topics, and Objectives

Having conducted the needs survey and having gathered the data, the writer formulated a goal of designing a set of English instructional listening materials using authentic materials for the first grade students of tourism department in SMK Negeri 4 Yogyakarta . Therefore, the goal formulated is familiarizing the students with English in order to prepare them to go into the working world with the skills to communicate using English. Furthermore, the writer listed topics that would be presented in each unit. In arranging the topics, the writer considered firstly the curriculum, whether these topics were appropriate or not to be given to the first grade students of tourism department in SMK Negeri 4 Yogyakarta. Secondly, the writer considered the situation most likely faced by the students. Thus, there were nine topics selected in this study. The topics were as follows: Table 4.4: The List of Topics Unit Topics 1 Greetings and leave takings 2 Introducing self and others 3 Asking and giving information 4 Describing people 5 Asking for and offering help and how to respond to them. 6 Numbers 7 Describing places 8 Asking and giving Explanation 9 Describing events Moreover, the writer stated the general objectives of what should be achieved PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 45 by the students by listening to the topics selected. The general objectives are stated as the standard competence. The standard competencies were that at the end of the semester, students are able to: 1 understand the interpersonal and transactional discourses formal and informal in the form of listening to any expressions related to daily life contexts. 2 understand the interpersonal and transactional discourses formal and informal in the form of listening to any expressions related to occupation. 3 understand the interpersonal and transactional discourses formal and informal in the form of listening to any expressions related to professions.
