4.5 Shifts from Sentence Unit in English to the Other Units in Bahasa Indonesia
The unit shifts in the level of sentence mostly occur in the simple sentences. These shifts can only occur to the lower levels since sentence is the
highest level in the grammatical structure.
1. Sentence unit in ST to word units in TT
1. ST WDTAE.9 : No, it did not. TT PDK.7 : Tidak.
2. ST WDTAE.89 : What abot ‘em? TT PDK.77 : Kenapa?
3. ST WDTAE.99 : No, I’m not. TT PDK.86 : Tidak.
4. ST WDTAE.99 : Smashing it up. TT PDK.86 : Dihancurkan.
5. ST WDTAE.179 : No, I don’t. TT PDK.155 : Tidak.
6. ST WDTAE.189 : How do you mean? TT PDK.165 : Maksudmu?
All those sentences are simple sentences since each of the sentences above contains one full subject and predicate. The translator decides to do shifts
from those sentences to make a natural translation, i.e. from sentence unit to word unit.
