4.4 Shifts from Clause Unit in English to the Other Units in Bahasa Indonesia

The unit shifts in the level of clause can occur to the lower levels such as word and phrase unit, and also to the higher level, that is sentence unit. 1.Clause unit in ST to word units in TT 1. ST WDTAE. 99 : The Bentley’s no good for what I want it for. TT PDK.86 : Bentley itu tidak cukup bagus untuk rencanaku. 2. ST WDTAE.189 : Now, go on with what you’re telling me about your husband wanting to murder you. TT PDK.164 : Sekarang lanjutkan ceritamu tentang suamimu yang ingin membunuhmu itu. The noun clauses which are underlined in both ST above are translated with the word level in bahasa Indonesia. The noun clause what I want it for in the ST no.1 is shifted to the word unit becomes the noun rencanaku. This clause actually can also be translated with clause apa yang aku rencanakan. But in this translation, the word rencanaku is choosed by the translator as the equivalence of the clause what I want it for in the sentence. In the ST no.2, the noun clause what you’re telling me is translated with the noun ceritamu. The unit shifts from clause level to the word level in these translations are done for the sake of naturalness of the translations. 3. ST WDTAE. 339 : And of course it was dangerous… TT PDK.298 : Dan tentu saja berbahaya. Universitas Sumatera Utara 4. ST WDTAE. 189 : …and things that people would think quite all right. TT PDK.165 : …dan hal-hal yang biasa. The dependent clause it was dangerous and people would think quite all right are translated with the words berbahaya and biasa in bahasa Indonesia. The shifts are done because of the naturalness of the expression. If it is translated literally following the original structure, the translation will sound awkward. Therefore, the shift should be done to establish the natural translation.

The clause I heard it is translated to the phrase telah mendengarnya by omitting the subject I ; the clause I suppose it’s just possible is translated to the phrase memang mungkin by omitting the subject I and the predicate suppose; the clause she would fall is translated to the phrase akan jatuh by omitting the subject Universitas Sumatera Utara she; the clause she was being an idiot is translated to the phrase tolol benar by omitting the subject she and the predicate was being; and the clause it was all right is translated to the phrase tidak apa-apa by omitting the subject it. This shift is done to avoid unnaturalness in translation although the TT cannot preserve a hundred percent of the SL message since there is no exact equivalence in translation.

To avoid complicated meaning due to the length of the sentences, the translators divided the long sentences into two sentences for each ST. The dependent clauses in the sentences of the ST above are shifted to the sentence level.
