4.4 Shifts from Clause Unit in English to the Other Units in Bahasa Indonesia
The unit shifts in the level of clause can occur to the lower levels such as word and phrase unit, and also to the higher level, that is sentence unit.
1.Clause unit in ST to word units in TT
1. ST WDTAE. 99 : The Bentley’s no good for what I want it for. TT PDK.86 : Bentley itu tidak cukup bagus untuk rencanaku.
2. ST WDTAE.189 : Now, go on with what you’re telling me about your husband wanting to murder you.
TT PDK.164 : Sekarang lanjutkan ceritamu tentang suamimu yang ingin membunuhmu itu.
The noun clauses which are underlined in both ST above are translated with the word level in bahasa Indonesia. The noun clause what I want it for in the
ST no.1 is shifted to the word unit becomes the noun rencanaku. This clause actually can also be translated with clause apa yang aku rencanakan. But in this
translation, the word rencanaku is choosed by the translator as the equivalence of the clause what I want it for in the sentence. In the ST no.2, the noun clause what
you’re telling me is translated with the noun ceritamu. The unit shifts from clause level to the word level in these translations are done for the sake of naturalness of
the translations.
3. ST WDTAE. 339 : And of course it was dangerous… TT PDK.298 : Dan tentu saja berbahaya.

4. ST WDTAE. 189 : …and things that people would think quite all right. TT PDK.165 : …dan hal-hal yang biasa.
The dependent clause it was dangerous and people would think quite all right are translated with the words berbahaya and biasa in bahasa Indonesia.
The shifts are done because of the naturalness of the expression. If it is translated literally following the original structure, the translation will sound awkward.
Therefore, the shift should be done to establish the natural translation.
2. Clause unit in ST to phrase unit in TT
5. ST WDTAE. 39 : In fact I wasn’t quite sure I heard it. TT PDK.31 : Saya bahkan tidak begitu yakin telah mendengarnya.
6. ST WDTAE. 79 : Sounds absurd but I suppose it’s just possible. TT PDK.68 : Kedengaran aneh,tapi memang mungkin.
7. ST WDTAE.159 : …swaying as though she would fall. TT PDK.138 : …badannya oleng seperti akan jatuh.
8. ST WDTAE.279 : She was being an idiot-imagining things. TT PDK.245 : Tolol benar-membayangkan hal-hal yang tidak pasti.
9. ST WDTAE. 329 : …and Gladys said it was all right because Mr Elford was there.
TT PDK.290 : …dan dia katakan tidak apa-apa karena ada tuan Elford. The
clause I heard it is translated to the phrase telah mendengarnya by
omitting the subject I ; the clause I suppose it’s just possible is translated to the phrase memang mungkin by omitting the subject I and the predicate suppose; the
clause she would fall is translated to the phrase akan jatuh by omitting the subject

she; the clause she was being an idiot is translated to the phrase tolol benar by omitting the subject she and the predicate was being; and the clause it was all
right is translated to the phrase tidak apa-apa by omitting the subject it. This shift is done to avoid unnaturalness in translation although the TT cannot preserve a
hundred percent of the SL message since there is no exact equivalence in translation.
3. Clause unit in ST to sentence unit in TT
10. ST WDTAE.69 : No one benefits by your death, so that’s ruled out. TT PDK.59 : Tak ada yang beruntung dengan kematianmu. Jadi alasan
itu bisa dikesampingkan. 11. ST WDTAE. 179 : Yes, said Bobby eagerly, as she paused.
TT PDK.155 : Ya, kata Bobby cepat-cepat, wanita itu diam. 12. ST WDTAE.189 : Yes. Oh I know it sounds hysterical and as though I was
making it all up. TT PDK.164 : Ya. Oh, aku tahu kedengaran histeris. Kedengarannya
aku mengarang-ngarang saja. 13. ST WDTAE.199 : She was silent a moment or two, when she said in a low
thoughtful voice. TT PDK.173 : Moira diam sejenak. Kemudian dia berkata pelan dengan
suara rendah. 14.ST WDTAE.209 : Frankie got up to go, but before departing she paused for
a moment.

69 TT PDK.182 : Frankie berdiri akan pergi. Tapi sebelum berangkat dia
diam sejenak. The long SL sentences above contain the independent and dependent
clause. To avoid complicated meaning due to the length of the sentences, the translators divided the long sentences into two sentences for each ST. The
dependent clauses in the sentences of the ST above are shifted to the sentence level.
