6. The Participants’ Lived Experiences on Low Financial Factor
In this part, the researcher is looking to find out how financial problem of the participants‘ family affects their learning process. The findings are gained
from the interviews with the three participants which topic is related to their family and economy conditions.
a. Tiwi
From the interview it can be revealed that Tiwi rarely gets pocket money. In some occasions, the money given by her parents is only enough for buying fuel
for Tiw i‘s motorcycle which she uses for going to school. It can be seen from the
conversation below.
R: W
e will go on different topic… Do you regularly get a pocket money? Can
you tell me the amount?
S1: rarely the money is only enough for the gasoline.. my parents usually think that more money means that I will only spend it for fun and not
focus on the study. IS114614LLF-LFC and LEF-FS
Tiwi also admitted that although she thinks that the pocket money is not enough for her, yet the money for fulfilling the daily family needs is still enough. It is as
what she said in the conversation below.
R: How about for the daily needs? Is it enough?
S1: enough. It is barely enough.
IS114614LLF-LFC and LEF-FS
From the conversations above, the researcher finds that low economy background within the family has directly affected Tiwis condition at her school.
Later, Tiwi revealed that she only has health problem when she gets her monthlies period. Meanwhile she also said that she is having concentration
problem if the other classmates are too noisy. The conversation is as follow.
103
R: Then do you have health problem at school?
S1: only in my monthlies. R:
oow.. Usually you get cramps? S1: yes
R: do you pass the class if that problem comes?
S1: I usually stay in the class… and then get home earlier
R: ok… so only once a month
S1: yes R:
Do you have a problem to concentrate or focus in class? S1: if other students are too muchc noisy
R: oh yes
IS114614LEF-LEF-OP
The situation shows that Tiwi fortunately does not have health problem at her school because of her family economy hardship. She also admitted that the reason
why she has a problem in concentrating to learn is not due to the low economy factor but more to the distraction from other classmates.
The financial problem is considered to affect Tiwi‘s effort in fulfilling herself with adequate facility and tools to help her learn English successfully.
From the interview, the researcher can find that Tiwi only has a cheap dictionary which is considered to be not complete like
Oxford‘s dictionary or something. It can be seen from the conversation below.
R: can you tell me what kind of dictionary you have? How many words?
S1: 1001 the small one IS114614LLF-LFC and LEF-SF
From the interview, it is also revealed that Tiwi is still wondering of having a laptop to help her in learning English. She told the researcher that she can study
and do English assignments and homework in easier and more fun way by using laptop. Here is what she said in the interview.
R: What kind of equipment or
tools that you don’t have to learn English? S1: what I really need is laptop
… laptop is faster than cell phone to open google translate.
R: so you want a laptop
S1: yes R:
Do you need those kinds of equipments at home?
104
S1: I need it R:
I see?
S1: it makes me feel easier and fun to do the homework. IS114614LLF-LFC and LEF-SF
From the conversations above, it can be found that the impact of Tiwis economy background on her learning facility only leads to the absence of good dictionary
and also a laptop, which she needs to support the English learning process at home.
The researcher later also found that the financial condition also forces Tiwi to have some distraction in her learning process at home, for example if she
has to take care of her little sibling and handle the housekeeping as her mother is suffering from an illness. It is reflected from the conversation below.
R: Are there any obstacles for you to learn at home? For example if you have
to take care of your siblings or help your parents or even work? S1:
of course there are… the duration to study at home is only short, my mom is also suffering from an illness so I have to handle the housekeeping
and taking care of my sibling.
IS114614LLF-LFC and LEF-FS
She later added that her sibling was once a student of certain special school for disabled children, but he quitted from the school because he often got bullied by
other students. This is what she said in the interview.
R: you are on grade X, your sibling?
S1: my little brother? R:
on what grade?
S1: my brother has left his school.. he was a disable person and studied in SLB but after being bullied by his mate he quitted.
IS114614LLF-LFC and LEF-FS
Tiwi admitted that some problems she has at home often affect her mood in studying, as can be seen in the conversation below.
105
R: How about the financial problem, is it also a problem for your studying
mood?
S1: yes
IS114614LLF-LFC and LEF-FS
The conversations above also show that Tiwi feels distracted to learn at home because of the family condition. This situation means that self-learning at home
can be disadvantageous for Tiwi. The researcher believes that the financial problem within a family life can
make parents pay less attention to their children‘s learning progress. Regarding with that, from the interview the researcher found that her parents rarely assist
Tiwi in learning or doing English homework although both of her father and mother spend most of their time at home. This situation also means that Tiwis
family becomes a distraction for her to develop her English through self-learning. The conversation is as follow.
R: Do your parents assist you in learning English or doing homeworks at
home?
S1: rarely R:
Do your parents spend their time mostly inside or outside home?
S1: mostly at home IS114614LLF-LFC and LEF-LLP-FS
Furthermore, the researcher also found out that the financial problem not only occurrs
in Tiwi‘s family but also at her school. Tiwi revealed that there is no language laboratory at her school, and even the library only provides dictionaries
for English subject. It is reflected from what she said in the interview.
R: Is there any language laboratory at your school? If any are the tools
working?
S1: I think there is no lab at the school… I have never gone there.
R: so you never have a listening section in learning English?
S1: not yet R:
ok… can you tell me how many books do you think your library has?
106
S1:
I don’t know.. The books usually have been distributed to students by the teacher
R: oo from the teacher?
S1: yes R:
how about the books which can only be read in library and cannot be borrowed home?
S1: as far as I know there are only dictionaries. IS114614LLF-LFC, LEF-SI and LEF-SE
From the interview result with Tiwi, the researcher can find that her family
financial problem has an effect on the amount of Tiwi‘s pocket money.
Fortunately, the economic problem does not cause significant effect on her health problem at school. In addition, Tiwi has less support from her parents to study at
home. Even she has to feel distracted because she has to do the housekeeping after the school time.
The researcher later also found that the economic problem does not only happen in
Tiwi‘s family but also at her school, which leads to lack of facilities like adequate library supply. Even there is no language laboratory to support the
English language learning process.
b. Rizka
From the interview can be revealed that Rizka rarely gets pocket money from her parents. She told the researcher that the money from her sister is actually
like extra money which is actually no t for Rizka‘s specific school needs. It can be
seen from the conversation below.
R: we will go on different topic… Do you regularly get a pocket money? Can
you tell me the amount? S2:
rarely… from the parents… usually I have from my sister who has worked…
R: that is pocket money also, isn’t it?
107
S2:
No… pocket money is usually from parents… to go to school.. But money from my sister is not for my school needs.
IS214614LEF-FS
Rizka admitted that although her pocket money is not regularly given, yet the money for fulfilling daily family needs is still enough. It is like what she said in
the conversation below.
R: How about for the daily needs at home? Is it enough?
S2: enough
… IS214614LEF-FS
From the conversations above, the researcher finds that low economy background within the family has directly affected Rizkas condition at her school.
The researcher then asked Rizka whether or not she often has health problem at school or if she has a concentration problem in the class. Rizka
answered that she does not have health problem even during her monthlies period. She also said that she is having concentration problem if the other classmates are
too noisy and if the lesson is boring. The situation shows that Rizka fortunately does not have health problem at school due to her family low economy
background. The conversation is as follow.
R: Do you have a problem to concentrate or focus in class?
S2: yes
… R:
why? S2:
often too much noise from the other students… and sometime when I am sleepy because the lesson is boring
R: Then do you have health problem at school?
S2: no
… R:
maybe when you have your period? S2: no
R: Ok…
IS214614LEF-OP
108 Quite different from
Tiwi‘s experience, it is found that Rizka seems like not having significant problem on facilitating herself with books and dictionaries.
She admitted that her only missed equipment to learn English is laptop. It can be seen from the conversation below.
R: Do you have any obstacles in getting English dictionaries or textbooks?
For example, because you don’t have enough money? S2:
I don’t really have problems… because I have had the books and dictionaries
R: how about laptop?
S2: I have not had it. IS214614LLF-LFC and LEF-SF
Rizka added that her equipment for learning English is enough, except the laptop since she has got the school textbook and also additional book from her sister and
a dictionary. Here is what she said in the interview.
R: So, what kind of equipments you have so far to learn English?
S2:
dictionary, textbooks, and Err… ‘Learning English in 60 minutes’
R: is that a book?
S2: yes R:
Oww.. so an additional book. And the textbook from the school.. Is it enough?
S2: yes IS214614LLF-LFC and LEF-SF
From the conversations above, it can be found that the impact of Rizkas economy background on her learning facility only leads to the absence of good dictionary
and laptop, which she needs to support her English learning process at home. Meanwhile, she also has good books which are given by her sister.
The researcher later also found that the financial condition also forces Rizka to have some distraction in her learning process at home, for example she
has to take care of her sister‘s daughter. It is reflected from the conversation
below.
109
R: Are there any obstacles for you to learn at home? For example if you have
to take care of your siblings or help your parents or even work? S2:
Yes. There is…
R: what is that?
S2:
taking care of my sister’s child.
R: how many children?
S2: only one child IS214614LLF-LFC and LEF-FS
Rizka also admitted that some financial problems she has at home often affect her mood in studying, as seen in the conversation below.
R: How about the financial problem, is it also a problem for your studying
mood?
S2: yes, quite often IS214614LLF-LFC and LEF-FS
The conversations above also show that Rizka feels distracted to learn at home because of the family condition. This situation means that self-learning at home
can be disadvantageous for Rizka. The researcher believes that the financial problem within a family life can
make parents pay less attention to their children‘s learning progress. Regarding with that, the researcher
found that Rizka‘s parents never assist her in learning or doing English homework. She added that her parents cannot be relied on to help
her doing the homework. This situation also means that Rizkas family becomes a distraction for her to develop English through self-learning. The conversation is as
follow.
R: Do your parents assist you in learning English or doing homeworks at
home?
S2: never. Maybe only remind me to study R:
Ok.. And the homework? S2:
yes… R:
can you ask your parents if you don
’t understand your English homework? S2:
I can’t… my parents don’t understand English.
IS214614LLF-LFC and LEF-FS
110 Furthermore, the researcher also found out that the financial problem does
not only occurr in her family but also at her school. Rizka revealed that she thinks the library is not adequate for the students. It is reflected from what she said in the
interview.
R: Do you think the school has provided adequate facilities in the library to
help the English learning? S2:
In my opinion… it is not adequate.
R: Ow. In your opinion it is not adequate.
IS214614LEF-LLP-SS
From the interview result with Rizka, the researcher can find that her family financial problem has
an effect on the amount of Rizka‘s pocket money. Fortunately, the economic problem does not cause significant effect on her health
problem at school. In addition, Rizka has less support from her parents to study at home. She
even feels distracted at home because she has to do the housekeeping and take care of her sister‘s child after the school time.
The researcher later also found that the economic problem does not only happen
in Rizka‘s family but also at her school, which leads to lack of facilities like adequate library supply. There is even no language laboratory to support the
English language learning process. c.
Apri From the interview can be revealed that Apri rarely gets pocket money
from his parents. He told the researcher that the money is only enough to buy snacks and drink. It can be seen from the conversation below.
R: Do you regularly get a pocket money? S3: rarely
R: how much you usually have?
111
S3: sometime only 2000 a day R: what is it usually used for?
S3: only for snacks and drinks. IS314614LLF-LFC and LEF-FS
Apri admitted that although his pocket money is not regularly given, but the money for fulfilling daily family needs is still enough. It is like what he said in the
conversation below.
R: How about for the daily needs at home? Is it enough?
S2: enough
… IS314614LEF-FS
From the conversations above, the researcher finds that low economy background within the family has directly affected Apris condition at his school.
Apri said that he rarely has health problem. Apri also said that he is having concentration problem if the other classmates are too noisy. The situation shows
that Apri fortunately does not have health problem at school due to her family low economy background. The only indication why he is difficult to concentrate while
learning is not because of the low economy factor. The conversation is as follow.
R: Then do you have health problem at school? S3: rarely
